Is this course for me?

This course helps you understand how exercise can influence lifestyle behaviour in a positive way. You’ll look at applied exercise physiology, study public health policy, and spend time learning about sports injury and rehabilitation. We’re looking for individuals who show a real interest in fitness, healthy living and an active lifestyle.

Preparation for a progressive industry

During this course you’ll develop a strong theoretical grounding in physiology, psychology, business management and sports events management. Learning through a mix of practical training and industry based coursework will give you an ideal grounding for a career in this progressive industry. You’ll become expert communicators and learn to work effectively on your own as well as part of a wider team. These transferable skills will be taught through course assessments, workshops and seminars.

A broad training programme

From functional anatomy and kinanthropometry, to the bioenergetics of human movement, this dynamic course of study will take you through key modules in sports nutrition, public health policy and exercise prescription. You’ll also spend time focusing on small business and entrepreneurship. This module is designed to equip you with an additional layer of skills, which will help you enter the marketplace as a self-employed professional, or to launch your own health and fitness venture.

Why choose Buckinghamshire New University?

We have strong links with a number of sports organisations, many of which sit on the University’s doorstep. These include the National Sports Centre at Bisham Abbey, home to several governing bodies of sport, and Stoke Mandeville Hospital, birthplace of the Paralympics. You’ll have the opportunity to blend academic study with a professional sports environment. The University hosts the Reading Ladies Football Club Senior Academy and also the pro basketball team, Surrey United.

Human Performance Laboratory

Our Human Performance, Exercise and Wellbeing Centre includes an indoor three-lane running track that incorporates 3D motion-capture technology. This facility helps to enhance athletes’ performance through improved technique, and assists with injury prevention and rehabilitation. The Human Performance Laboratory is equipped to assess a range of physiological, biomechanical and psychological parameters. We are also currently the only university in the UK to focus on disability sport, an area of increasing importance.

Hands-on work practice

In the third year, you’ll have the chance to develop and practice your new skills in the professional working environment. This is done as part of the Working With a Client module. However, existing links with nearby sport governing bodies also offer potential for further work experience through part-time work during the holidays.
