What will this course cover?

Your studies will focus on the core functions of football business management and will be supplemented by the financial pathway. The finance pathway modules introduce you to the principles of financial accounting, management accounting and require you to integrate theory with practice. You will also build upon your understanding of football business and be introduced to international business models, management concepts, business planning, contemporary issues and financial management. You will analyse and evaluate global sources of revenue and issues of financial governance.

Football Business & Finance integrates the core functions of business management with financial accounting in the context of football and sports organisations and governing bodies. The degree monitors the intense media coverage of contemporary football issues to apply relevant themes to stimulate and enhance the student learning experience. You will be taught in lectures and participate in stimulating seminar debates, with support from UCFB's virtual learning environment to fully encompass the academic experience. The interconnected facets of football business are applied across a diverse range of assessment strategies to provide you with a contextual insight of how sources of finance affect an organisation's performance, and how that performance affects an organisation's bottom line. This degree will prepare you for a career in commercial business and finance, both inside and outside the sector.

Throughout all three years of study, core business modules are supplemented by finance modules which require you to understand and apply the fundamentals of accounting terminology such as balance sheets, cash flow, gearing ratios, return on investment, net present value and consolidated accounts. You will have a comprehensive set of transferable skills to provide you with a competitive edge in business. The final year contains a range of elective modules which allows you freedom to pursue a new area that interests you the most, providing you with greater flexibility upon graduation.

Course Details

Football business brings the study of finance into a highly stimulating context. This means that students can check their evolving understanding against the intensive media coverage of this global industry's finances. It also means that what you learn in lectures, seminars and the library can be considered in the light of your own experience of how finance affects performance and performance affects finance in the football business.

This joint honours degree is aimed at motivating students and preparing them for work in either or both of these two overlapping spheres. The industry ranges from some of the most powerful brands and businesses in the world, such as Adidas, Nike, Umbro, Sky TV, UEFA Champions League, FIFA World Cup, Barclays Premier League, right through to the stories every season of clubs struggling with cash flow in meeting their responsibilities to the tax authorities and to other creditors.

The course explains that there is a common core to understanding the finances of a business, whether you want to be the finance director of a company with a turnover of hundreds of millions of pounds or the financial controller of your local football club securing the cash to pay the players' wages that month. So this course offers a good grounding in finance. It will bring the content of balance sheets and cash flow alive. It is of even greater significance for those who make their career in the football business. As the industry becomes more professional, there will be an increasing need to understand its finances.

The first year of the course focuses on the foundations of finance and how it relates to football business. This focus on the basic principles of economics and accounting will enable students to develop an understanding of financial terminology and the role of finance in business management. Access to the accounts and financial concerns of local clubs form a practical introduction to the weekly rhythm of finance in the football business.

The second year develops your understanding of how football's global businesses are financed and managed, how to assess and improve financial performance and the role of finance in the most high profile of international football business matters, from takeovers to transfers.

The final year sees the development of a finance and football-related research project on a topic chosen by you, together with modules providing a strategic view of international finance and a bridge into financial practice.

This module map provides a list of the modules that make up your course.

Each module is worth a specified number of credits (typically either 15 or 30 credits for undergraduate courses). Compulsory (or ‘core’) modules cover key subject knowledge, while ‘option’ modules enable you to develop your own interests. For a full-time course you must take modules worth a total of 120 credits at each level of the course. The number of option modules you can take depends on the number of compulsory modules at each level. You can find more information about how your course is structured via the Academic Advice pages.

Our teaching is informed by research and employer requirements, and modules change periodically to reflect developments in the subject area. In addition, where we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an option module, this may not be offered.
