What will I learn? 

We aim to develop a wide-ranging, practical understanding of mechanical, electrical and aerospace systems engineering and how this knowledge is applied in the aerospace industry.

The course is taught with a focus on developing your problem-solving skills, particularly in the areas of design support, product testing and in-service support. You can gain detailed experience and understanding of how aircraft systems work, while gaining valuable skills in applying the same processes and procedures used in the aerospace industry.

Year one:

First year subjects include mechanical and electrical engineering, aerodynamic and aircraft systems, aircraft structures and propulsion systems plus supporting studies in mathematics and practical engineering.

Year two:

In the second year, you will study aircraft systems, structures, aerodynamics and management in further depth. There will also be modules such as human factors in aerospace and avionics. You will have the option to apply for a one-year work placement or study abroad in a partner institution.

For the final year, the modules will be mainly activity led such as aerospace applications and aerospace industrial studies. Other modules include aerospace technology and real time control. You will also have to plan and deliver your own individual project.

Why choose this course?

On this course you will be taught the intricacies of aircraft systems, the various types of system failure and how we can prevent failure in aircraft design. You will be provided with the vital skills needed to work as an aerospace engineer working for an airline or the military.

These skills include problem solving, creativity and innovation, leadership, team working, business acumen and ensuring quality. To do this you will work on fantastic equipment including a Harrier Jump Jet, Flight Simulation Suite and the Mercedes Patronas Wind Tunnel. You will challenge current methodologies and techniques to transform the future of the global aeronautical industry.

How you'll be taught

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars and practical workshop classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you can develop professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.
