About the course

If you work with disabled people and have a Foundation degree, get an Honours degree in just four terms with this progression course, focusing your learning on the experiences of disabled people.

You will attend lectures for one day per week over four terms, which mean you can study and work. The course focuses on your own particular interests and you may select a relevant dissertation topic to suit your own personal interests.

The Applied Disability Studies BA (Hons) is a top up (progression) course, unique to this region. It caters for students with 240 credits from the University of Bedfordshire FdA Disability Studies or a similar 240 credit course.

Why choose this course?

  • Learn about the theoretical perspectives shaping disabled people’s lives, combining theory with practice working with children/young people or adults with a disability
  • Study the experiences of disabled people, their self-organisation, user-led campaigns for justice and equality
  • Develop your understanding of discrimination and exclusion of disabled people from mainstream society
  • Gain a critical insight into the contemporary issues affecting the lives of disabled people.
  • Explore the experiences of disabled people in relation to cross-cultural perspectives, and the way identities such as age, gender, race, religion, social class and sexuality intersect with disability.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed in a number of ways including essays, tests, portfolios and a final dissertation.

The purpose of assessment is to provide formative feedback to you, to monitor your performance and to measure your attainment. In addition, it aims to enable you to demonstrate that you have fulfilled the objectives of each unit as well as the profession as a whole.

The assessment strategies are designed to give you the opportunity to demonstrate the range of knowledge, understanding and skills required by intending teachers and those who wish to work within education.
