About the course

Our seven-week pre-sessional English language course is highly intensive and designed to help students adapt socially and academically before the start of the academic year as well as enabling them to meet the English language entry requirements for their chosen award.

What you will study?

During the seven-week Pre-Sessional English Language course you will receive twenty-five hours of taught classes each week with regular tutorials and a number of excursions. Most materials will be supplied free of charge although you will be required to purchase one textbook at a cost of approximately £25.

The Pre-sessional English language course will help you to develop your general and academic English language skills in four key areas:

  • Writing for essays, research reports and examinations
  • Reading journals, articles and books
  • Listening to lectures, debates and discussions
  • Speaking during seminars and presentations

Teaching

We use a communicative language teaching approach. This means that you will be expected to actively participate and contribute to the classes. Assessment is by means of coursework, tests, projects and presentations. Students receive individual help and attention through weekly one-to-one tutorials in order to monitor progress and help to develop the skills necessary for academic study at a British university. We have a maximum class size of 18.

Classes run from 9am to 12 noon from Monday to Friday, with afternoon classes from 1pm to 4pm from Monday to Thursday, with occasional field trips on Wednesday afternoon. Therefore, you will have classes for 27 hours most weeks, but 24 hours when there is a Wednesday field trip.

On every field trip, support is provided by two members of the Centre for International English team per coach. A full risk assessment is conducted before the trip and a departmental mobile number is made available to all students so that contact can be maintained throughout the trip between staff and students.

Careers

Upon successful completion of the five-week Pre-sessional English language course students may progress on to their chosen undergraduate or postgraduate course at the University of South Wales.
