About the course

Birkbeck is different: classes are in the evening, so you can work, study, volunteer, intern or do your own thing during the day. We know the 'standard' university model isn't right for everyone, so our unique evening teaching gives people who care about their future the opportunity to study at one of the world's top research-intensive universities and move forward with their life goals at the same time. We've been helping people access higher education and get back into studying for nearly 200 years, so you'll find a famously friendly and supportive learning environment.

Our new Foundation Year programmes provide the best possible preparation for degree-level study at Birkbeck. They are ideal if you do not meet the entry requirements for the undergraduate degree you would like to study, if you feel you are not quite ready for an undergraduate degree, or if you are returning to study and need extra help and support. Whatever your background and circumstances, Birkbeck's Foundation Year degrees will prepare you for success.

This programme will build your confidence and give you the core knowledge and key skills you need to succeed at university. You will also get a taste of the subject area you are interested in and deepen your understanding of the career potential of your chosen subject.

This BA Arts and Humanities with Foundation Year allows you to pursue your interests across the arts and humanities, choosing to study film and media, English and humanities, history of art, or a language and its associated culture, separately or in interdisciplinary combinations. You design your own programme of study, with expert guidance from our academic experts, choosing from an extensive range of option modules.

Upon successful completion of the 1-year Foundation Year, you will automatically progress on to our 3-year, full-time evening study BA Arts and Humanities. Or you can choose from nearly 30 undergraduate degrees in arts and humanities, English literature, history, languages and linguistics, philosophy and politics.

You need only complete 1 application and you enrol onto 1 programme.

Teaching

At Birkbeck, almost all of our courses are taught in the evening and our teaching is designed to support students who are juggling evening study with work and other daytime commitments. We actively encourage innovative and engaging ways of teaching, to ensure our students have the best learning experience. In the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), the government’s system for rating university teaching, Birkbeck was allocated a Silver award.

Teaching may include formal lectures, seminars, and practical classes and tutorials. Formal lectures are used in most degree programmes to give an overview of a particular field of study. They aim to provide the stimulus and the starting point for deeper exploration of the subject during your own personal reading.

Seminars give you the chance to explore a specific aspect of your subject in depth and to discuss and exchange ideas with fellow students. They typically require preparatory study.

In addition, you will have timetabled meetings with your Personal Tutor.

Assessment

Assessment is an integral part of your university studies and usually consists of a combination of coursework and examinations. You will be given time to complete coursework and prepare for exams.

Unseen written examinations are usually taken in the Summer term, during May to June, and, in most cases, are held during the day on a weekday – if you have daytime commitments, you will need to make arrangements for daytime attendance. Exam timetables are published online in March each year.

Find out more about assessment at Birkbeck, including guidance on assessment, feedback and our assessment offences policy.
