About the course

This part-time earth sciences course offers you an introduction to geology, with an emphasis on mineralogy and volcanology. You will explore hard rock geology, the use of petrographic microscopes, and geohazard activity. There is no fieldwork requirement, although you may attend field classes if you wish, putting your skills into practice. This course is very flexible; it is offered part-time at Birkbeck, or you can study it by distance learning, wherever you are in the world - and whenever suits you.

Course structure

To gain the Certificate in Higher Education, you must successfully complete the following modules, worth a total of 120 credit points.


YEAR 1 COMPULSORY MODULES:

  • Foundations of Mineralogy
  • Introduction to Geochemistry
  • Introduction to Geology

YEAR 2 COMPULSORY MODULES:

  • Igneous Petrology
  • Metamorphic Petrology
YEAR 2 OPTION MODULES (CHOOSE 2):
  • Earth's Resources and Raw Materials
  • Geological Hazards
  • Magmatic Processes
  • Volcanism in the Solar System

Teaching

Face-to-face lectures are supplemented by Moodle, a web-based environment where you can access course materials and videos of lectures. Moodle can also be used as a distance learning alternative with supplementary web-based material.

You are welcome to attend weekend field classes alongside students taking the BSc Geology.


Assessment

A combination of reports, practical work and written examinations. Some modules include continuous assessment through written work.



Fees

  • Part-time home/EU students: £ 4500 pa

ADDITIONAL COSTS

As well as fees, you should expect to pay other study-related expenses, for travel to and from College, books, stationery, etc. Birkbeck provides advice and financial support for students who experience hardship in meeting the travel costs of essential fieldwork or study visits.

On this programme, you will also have to pay for the following additional costs:

There are 4 fieldtrips available as optional elements of this programme, as follows:

  • The fieldtrip to the Isle of Skye, Scotland includes costs for 11 nights’ accommodation (approximately £517, including evening meals), return flights to Inverness (from £100) and a minibus deposit (£120).
  • The fieldtrip to Scourie, Scotland includes costs that usually total around £700.
  • The fieldtrip to Greece includes costs for return flights (approximately £300), hotel (approximately £470) and vehicle hire (approximately £100).
  • The fieldtrip to Morocco includes costs that usually total around £700 for flights and accommodation.
  • In addition, students will need to equip themselves with field-note books and stationery, compass and hammer and GPS equipment (both optional), hand lens, walking boots and all weather clothing for Skye and Scourie
