So Coventry University and Emirates Aviation University will be delivering an exclusive course to aviation professionals in both the UK and the UAE. Graduates will be awarded a dual MBA in Aviation Management (Executive) from these two high profile institutions.

The course explores the nature and implications of challenges within aviation. Professionals will develop the skills and mindset needed to meet these challenges. And they will gain key leadership and strategic management skills they will need in future executive careers.

Course content and delivery has been tailored to fit the lives of busy professionals. Four days of intensive short block teaching, followed by supported study, means maximum learning and minimum disruption. Graduates round off the course with a 6 month industry based Masters Dissertation, showcasing the skills and knowledge they have learned in the first 12 months.

Why an executive MBA?

The Executive MBA will allow professionals the opportunity to step back from their operational roles and benefit from interaction with other senior managers within the aviation sector, allowing them time to explore current ideas and latest thinking in the aviation industry.

The first 3 modules of the programme will be delivered in Dubai, which has witnessed extensive growth in both airline passenger numbers, cargo volumes and airport infrastructure development over the last decade.

The last 3 modules will be delivered in Coventry University, which has been awarded University of the Year (Times Higher Education Awards 2015) and Modern University of the year from 2014 to 2016.

Apart from the 4 day taught modules, professionals enrolled in the programme will get the opportunity for organised visits to relevant aviation related organisations in Dubai such as Dubai International Airport the new Al Maktoum International Airport, Emirates Airline, Emirates SkyCargo, Dnata (Emirates Ground Handling Division) and Emirates Flight Catering. Professionals enrolled on the programme will also benefit from guest lecturers and presentations from industry professionals providing insight into the latest industry practices.

In Coventry, UK professionals will have the opportunity for organised visits to a range of relevant organisations within the aviation sector.

Dual site delivery will provide an added dimension to this programme, allowing professionals to gain an insight into the operation and management of established and developing aviation sectors. The Executive MBA includes a unique combination of aviation related modules and general management modules which are contextualised within the aviation industry. The programme is targeted at professionals within the industry. The taught element can be completed within a compressed timeframe of 12 months

 What will I learn? 

The course structure has 6 modules, worth 20 credits each, and an industry based Masters Dissertation worth 60 credits. Learning on individual modules is supported primarily by a Module Leader with associated module teams.

Airport Operations: The module views airports as complex systems aimed at delivering a service to passengers and air freight. The main operational procedures for handling air cargo and passenger throughput in airport terminals are presented. The module also explores how physical characteristics impose constraints on aircrafts, the services provided to airlines, to passengers in the terminal buildings and to air cargo companies. Professional will be introduced to the design and management problems relating to these facilities.

Global Issues in the Airline Industry: This module provides professional the opportunity to explore a wide range of topical issues that affect the operation and management of an airline and the development of the industry as a whole. These include advances in technology, human factors, political and environmental issues. Guest lectures by experts that include industry-based specialists form the basis of the teaching element of this module. Professionals are given the opportunity to develop their understanding of particular topics covered in the module through an in-depth research study, on which they are assessed.

Organisational Behaviour & Human Resources Management: This module provides a thorough grounding in the theories of organisations, the processes of organisational designing and the practice of human resource management. The first part of the module concentrates on the concepts of organizational structure and behaviour. The second part reviews the changing nature of the employment relationship and critically evaluates the contribution of HRM to organisational effectiveness and efficiency.

Airline Strategy, Finance and Economics: This module comprehensively develops professionals’ understanding of the strategic, financial, and economic aspects of airlines. It comprehensively examines their strategies, analyses their environments, determines how they may improve, and how they may grow and develop. It examines the demand for airlines together with their costs, revenues, pricing, and investigates key strategic, financial, and economic trends, problems, and developments for airlines.

Innovation & Change: This module aims to identify the beliefs, attitudes and values of people as both individuals and within an organisational context, and reflects on how these shape behaviours and perceptions of others. It will assess the prevailing leadership styles within organisations and the effects on performance, motivation and levels of commitment to values and goals. It will also aim to draw on the concepts of creativity and innovation and the conditions and processes required to encourage them, to identify opportunities for innovation and improvement in organisations and to explain the rationale for choice in the context of organisational objectives.

Executive Leadership & Decision Making: This module gives professionals an introduction to the key concepts, theories and current issues in executive leadership and decision making with a contextualisation to the aviation industry. Professionals will study a range of different perspectives on leadership including competency models, followership and transformational leadership and will consider how these relate to the leader’s role in organisational strategy development, cross-cultural communication and corporate social responsibility. The module will also aim to provide professionals with an understanding of the complexities of decision-making, problem solving and how decisions can be improved.

A Dissertation is also required to complete the course. To support work on your Dissertation, you are assigned a personal supervisor who communicates with you regularly to provide guidance.

Industry Based Masters Dissertation: The dissertation includes a study of research methods and gives professionals the opportunity to enact a piece of individual problem-solving research of a strategic nature, thereby demonstrating their competence in applying the concepts and skills acquired during the taught part of the programme.

How will this course be taught? 

Teaching will be managed by academic partners in Dubai in the UAE, and in Coventry in the UK. Professionals will need to attend modules at both locations to complete the course. Teaching is delivered in an intensive 4 day block, followed by individual study and submission of coursework.

How will I be assessed? 

Assessment on your course will be a mixture of coursework assignments and formal examinations which will vary depending on the module. In addition to written tasks, you may be required to present to others so that you have the opportunity to improve and enhance your professional communication skills. Coursework can be individual, or in set groups to help widen your team and networking skills. You will be advised of the assessment criteria prior to the commencement of the course.

Teaching contact hours 

Teaching will be delivered in an intense short block. A typical 20 credit module consists of approximately 200 hours of study time. This is typically made up of:

  • 25 - 30 contact hours
  • 4 - 8 hours guest speaker / aviation related organisational visits
  • 162 hours of independent study
