Complex Care in Children, Young People and Families


This programme has been developed to meet the needs of health care practitioners, predominantly nurses, midwives, doctors, physiotherapists, social workers, occupational therapists and individuals who wish to expand and enhance their practice around complex care. The programme has been designed in consultation with clinical experts, user groups and charities to ensure that the content reflects current contemporary issues in complex care for children, young people and their families.

Why choose this course? 

A specific feature of this course is the contemporary blended online delivery style. This innovative course is designed to be delivered and assessed entirely online via the Internet. Each module of learning is offered through the use of interactive web based learning, using patient journeys as a focus for student work. The course is aimed at all members of the multidisciplinary team and is open to lay people and will encourage students to work together online to not only develop their specialist knowledge but also to learn how each other’s roles combine to offer family centered care. As a result of this approach students will be able to study from home or the workplace and there is no requirement to attend the University.

Individuals choose this course as it will enhance their employability by developing the following:

  • knowledge and understanding of the underpinning principal concepts and theories in relationship to the needs of children, young people and their families;
  • the ways in which evidence is used and could be used to shape the organisation and delivery of health and social care;
  • the relationship between agency policies, legal requirements and professional boundaries in shaping the nature of services for Children and Young People Complex Care needs and their families.


What will I learn? 

Explore perspectives in relation to children and young people (CYP) with palliative and complex care needs and the impact on their families. Theoretical perspectives will be examined in order to identify how an integrated approach and the best available evidence can provide access to appropriate specialist services, support and care for CYP and their families.

Contemporary evidence based practice and the impact that communication and engagement has on the care provision, access and outcomes for children, young people and their families.

Medicine management in palliative and complex care for CYP will be analysed in line with key agendas, policy and pathways.

Where appropriate the complex, transitional and end of life care in the context of neonates will be evaluated.

How will this course be taught? 

  • Each module is delivered ONLINE
  • Theory modules comprise of 20 credit modules and in some cases a longer project module.
  • The hours allocated to individual teaching activities can be found in individual module descriptors.
  • Some modules comprise of integrated theory and practice, whilst others are theory based only.
  • Access to a computer and good Broadband Internet connection is essential.
  • Use of innovative communication media such as SKYPE for virtual meetings will be required.
  • A set of headphones if required for your PC/laptop.

How will I be assessed? 

All modules of study within this programme will be assessed via coursework in which the student will explore aspects, of the individual as a practitioner, the organisation, the child’s journey and care delivery and the family.

Teaching contact hours 

Module/teaching contact is 200 hours for a 20 credit module. This will be comprised of:

  • 20 hours of lectures;
  • 10 hours of workshops/seminars;
  • 10 hours of tutorial support;
  • 160 hours of self-directed learning via access to web-based materials, recommended texts and other resources.

How will this course enhance my career prospects? 

On successful completion of the programme you will gain a postgraduate qualification at Masters level which is highly recognised by business and the public sector.

Postgraduates are highly employable and on average, earn more than individuals whose highest qualification is an undergraduate degree.

This higher degree qualification is responsive to health care employers needs and demonstrates your ability to critically analyse care within the context of health and social care section collaboration and partnership.
