Buckinghamshire New University in partnership with London United Basketball Club have created a unique tailor-made degree program to allow elite basketball athletes the chance to combine gaining experience, exposure and valuable basketball opportunities alongside gaining a world recognised degree qualification. Successful applicants will receive approximately 10 hours of on court training per week, free gym membership and strength and conditioning support all integrated into their academic timetable.



The course has been designed specifically to allow elite basketball performers the opportunity to continue their sporting performance and apply their strengths and knowledge to their academic development gaining a worldwide recognised qualification, a portfolio of vocational qualifications and providing them with a very realistic introduction to the world of European professional basketball.

From the very beginning we very strongly believed that in order to produce elite basketball performers their on court training, athletic performance and academic programmes must be fully integrated to maximise their potential. We have a designed course which encompasses high level specialist coaching and educational programs to allow aspiring basketball players the opportunity to continue to develop to an elite level and exposure to elite competition in addition to maximising their employability.
All units taught at the Buckinghamshire New University High Wycombe campus are tailor made to allow basketball performers to participate in a minimum of 10 hours of on court training and 4 hours of strength and conditioning per week.

Competition is provided through participation in the highest professional league in the UK-British Basketball League www.surreyunited.co.uk and International competition is provided by participation in the International Student Basketball League (ISBL) www.isbl-basket.com which is a unique first of its kind competition involving the best university teams from Russia, Kazakhstan,
Ukraine, Lithuania and Estonia to name but a few. Buckinghamshire New University have travelled to Kazan, Russia to represent England in the Final Eight Tournament of the ISBL gaining valuable experience and exposure. For

Students will also be able to take advantage of the Future Stars program providing international competition, exposure and coach education.


You will be studying towards achieving a worldwide recognised qualification in BA (Hons) Sports Development and Coaching. This course is ideal if you're interested in developing your career in the sports industry, with a particular focus on coaching.
This course will prepare you for a wide range of roles within the sport development and coaching industries. The course will also allow you to develop strong, transferrable academic and professional skills and practice delivering sport to the community in a number of projects, placements and volunteering opportunities alongside allowing you to develop your basketball performance at a professional level.


You will study the history, development and structure of the sport industry in the UK as well as socio-cultural issues for sport, issues for marketing and funding for sport and the strategic development and implementation of sport policy, events and initiatives. The programme also includes specialist modules in coaching, covering coaching philosophies, skills, methodologies, psychology and learning styles.

In the second and third years of study you will also have the opportunity to choose modules that specialise in the development and/or administration of basketball using our club partnership. In addition, areas such as performance analysis or training for fitness using our state-of-the-art Human Performance Laboratory can also be explored.

Throughout the three years there are many opportunities aimed at enriching the students’ learning experience and maximising employability. Students will have the opportunity to attend guest lectures both in the UK and abroad with a variety of key speakers including the top coaches and players in professional European basketball, politicians and captains of industry all discussing the issues of sport for and elite performance.

Alongside the BA (Hons) programme students will gain additional vocational qualifications such as UKCC Basketball Coaching qualifications (Level 1 and Level 2) and gain valuable coaching experience as part of the London and Surrey United Basketball Club Community Programmes allowing students to build a portfolio of experience coaching school pupils and young children through different community and club projects in addition to paid employment.

Employability is a particularly important theme throughout the degree, and students are encouraged to gain as much industry experience as possible through volunteering, paid part-time work, work placements and a sandwich year option. Additionally our diverse range of industry partners can offer you a unique opportunity to network during your studies.

Sport is a truly significant social phenomenon that impacts on people’s lives in a number of different ways. It is increasingly seen as a force for good, bringing together communities at both local and global levels, improving the nation’s health and helping to tackle a range of social problems and issues. As a result, all aspects of sport development continue to be high on the government agenda and this expanding industry seeks vibrant, qualified and experienced sport development officers and coaches to deliver on sport policy at participatory and elite levels of sport, and everything in between.

By studying Sport Development and Coaching you will be associated with a university that has been a pioneer in sport-related studies over the last 15 years and has a strong reputation for delivering vocational sport courses. You will be able to make full use of the combined industry and academic knowledge and experience of our dedicated staff and take advantage of our unique partnership between Buckinghamshire New University and London United Basketball Club. You may also specialise in development and coaching in basketball by selecting options in the second and third years that create a pathway in the administration of the sport.


We are passionate about providing our students with the highest level of sporting competition. During the first year of programme student athletes on our Men’s programme have gained experience at the highest level in the UK (BBL) representing Surrey United competing in front of live crowds of approximately 4500 people with footage televised on British Eurosport. Our student athletes have also gained exposure through competition abroad competing in the ISBL.

For the 2014 / 2015 academic year we would like to expand our programme to provide the same type of opportunities for our women’s programme.


The opportunity to take part in a tailor made programme specifically designed to combine both basketball performance and academic career.

Students completing the programme will be highly employable in a field that values transferable graduate skills and prior engagement with the industry. Students will gain both a theoretical and practical knowledge of sport development and coaching as well as recognised and respected coaching qualifications and hands-on experience of working with local and/or national partners.

Typical job titles for graduates would include Sport Development Manager, Sport Development Officer, Sport-specific Development Officer, Sports Coach, Community Sports Coach, Youth Worker, School Sport Coordinator, Physical Activity Coordinator. An increasing number of graduates in the field are also going on to take postgraduate qualifications including PGCEs and masters-level programmes.

Current students on our programmes include the captain of BBL team Surrey United and Great Britain Under 20 player, Elvisi Dusha.
"My experience so far has been an exciting challenge physically and mentally because trying to juggle my professional basketball career with studies makes things very busy.
