The BSc (Hons) International Business and Management course integrates business, management, entrepreneurship and leadership disciplines and is orientated towards operating in a global environment.
This Chartered Management Institute accredited course is perfect for anyone seeking a managerial business career with a multinational enterprise or domestic company which trades internationally, as well as entrepreneurs looking to set up their own business. The work-based ’Business Internship’ module also gives you the option to undertake a ten-week internship in the UK or overseas without the need for a sandwich year.
Plus, you will develop internationally sought-after skills and knowledge in key areas such as transnational collaboration, virtual team-working, use of technologies and global procurement and sourcing. In short, the tools and commercial insight you need to launch a managerial career anywhere in the world.

What you will study?
Students will have access to a network of value-adding activities throughout each year of study. In addition to the, opportunity to speak a foreign language, students are able to build personal, academic and employability skills through the Business School’s Centre for Academic Success (CAS) and the Business Clinic.
Year One: International Business degree
In the first year of study, all students in the Business School gain a broad-based business foundation through the following core modules:
- Management – 20 credits
- Supply chain – 20 credits
- Human resources – 20 credits
- Marketing – 20 credits
- Becoming a Professional: Enterprise Project – 20 credits
- Becoming a Professional: Critical Business Enquiry – 20 credits
This reflects the importance of a good grounding in core business disciplines, with ‘internationalisation’ running as a strong theme throughout the year so that all students develop a global outlook, as well as entrepreneurship and critical thinking. This approach also allows students the flexibility to transfer in or out of this course and pursue the qualification that is most relevant to their emerging interests.
There is also the opportunity to start learning a foreign language with tutor support in a ‘language café’ setting. The emphasis is on business/ conversational French, German or Spanish which can be progressed into the second and third year of study.
Year Two: International Business degree
This year gives students with the opportunity to critically explore theoretical concepts in authentic international contexts.
In the second semester, International Business modules will be studied in the English language in a choice of one of the Business School’s partner institutions overseas, including France, Germany and Spain. Alternatively, you can develop practical experience of business by undertaking work experience in an organisation overseas.

Year Three: International Business degree
The final year of study will teach you to think more critically and strategically about business and management in an international setting.

- Business Strategy – 20 credits
- International Consultancy Project – 40 credits (optional)
- Critical Enquiry Project – 40 credits (optional)
The course is available over three years or four years for the sandwich course option.
Typically, the learning experience will be a blend of class activity and independent learning.
For the study abroad and project modules, students will have a combination of taught elements but with a stronger focus on self-study.
Students also have the opportunity to interface with students in other parts of the world by linking up virtually to create a ‘global classroom’, where students can work together on issues with global and cross-cultural significance
Typically, students would have around 12 hours class contact per week during the taught modules. The typical week would be based around four days of timetables activity.
A range of speakers from global industries and guest lecturers with experience of multi-cultural working are included throughout the programme. Students will also have access to high profile guest speakers through the University’s Global Choices programme.
Your studies will be underpinned by the latest research undertaken by the South Wales Business School Research Group. This means you will be taught by academics who are at the forefront of their specialist field.
A variety of assessment methods are incorporated into the programme to reflect authentic global workplace settings and prepare students for the world of work. These include business producing reports; presentations; case-studies; posters, portfolios and digital diaries; business simulations; and research or consultancy projects in addition to more traditional methods.
In year two, students can choose between a 10-week study period at one of our European partner institutions where business programmes are taught in English, or a 10-week internship in another country to gain work experience in an international context.
Our students can also join Enactus, an international organisation that works with students in developing socially responsible businesses, or work as as trainee business analysts with the USW Business Clinic . Many of the clients are multinational companies such as Tata Steel or internationally focused organisations, such as, the Wales Centre for International Affairs.
