PATHWAY OVERVIEW

Management is about making decisions and getting the most from people at every level in all types of organisations. Business Management at Swansea provides a number of core subjects, plus a number of specialisms or a number of specialist subjects, creating an academically rewarding educational experience that provides an excellent foundation for a broad range of careers.

Successful completion of this pathway will lead to the award of one of the following from Swansea University:


Foundation Year Modules

Interactive Learning Skills and Communication

This module has been designed to help students develop their academic literacy and communication skills in preparation for undergraduate study and to understand the institutional culture, practices, rules and expectations of British higher education in an international academic context and community.

Assessment: presentations, group work, research report, referencing

Business

Providing students with knowledge of the fundamental aspects of business and business management, this module offers extensive considerations in terms of business planning, product marketing, managing people and the legal side of business. This module also focuses on change management, essential in an age of continual technological advances.

Assessment: Presentation, Examination

Critical Thinking

The module provides students with a fundamental knowledge base and intellectual skills associated with thinking critically. Also covered is understanding the basic requirements for building and consolidating a reasoned argument, issues of neutrality and bias and an emphasis is placed on the issue of the credibility of ideas, texts and evidence.

Assessment: In-class tests, essay

IT Support

Comprehensive understanding of current ICT issues is essential in the modern world. Through this module students will gain the skills to equip them in the use of common productivity and content management software programmes. This module will emphasise the use of Microsoft Windows packages including PowerPoint, Excel and Word as a platform for further study.

Assessment: Class test (unweighted)

Economics

This module provides students with an understanding of the fundamental theories and concepts of micro and macro-economics by combining theory with application to real world examples, events and situations in areas such as market competition, price determination, business costs and decision making, how the economy works and the effects of government policies on the economy.

Assessment: Essay, examination

Statistics

Here an introduction to statistical concepts within the context of business, industry and government is provided to students. Numerous data sources are employed including business, sport, medicine, physical science, engineering sciences, biological science and social science. This module provides an opportunity for meaningful interpretation of statistical information and results through a variety of statistical measures

Composition and Style*

Aiming to assist students in improving their academic performance in terms of writing and presenting, Composition and Style dedicates time to allowing students to understand the importance of feedback and reflection in order to improve future performance. The module therefore provides students with the fundamental knowledge base and skills required at undergraduate level.

Assessment: Essays, examination

Applied Critical Thinking*

This module builds a fundamental knowledge base and establishes intellectual skills associated with thinking critically. Focus is placed on the real world application of critical thinking in identifying strong and weak arguments in the academic world and beyond.

Assessment: In-class test, essay examination

Globalisation*

Addressing fundamental aspects of Globalisation and the realities of today’s world, this module considers the economic, political, technological and social forces currently impacting on globalisation, providing an insight into the implications of continued globalisation on Multi-National Corporations and global trade.

Assessment: Presentation, examination

English Portfolio**

The aim of English Skills Portfolio is to enable students to develop their English Language level within an academic context, and to equip students with the linguistic and academic skills necessary to perform confidently within their chosen discipline, whilst simultaneously encouraging them to become effective independent learners.

First Year Modules

Business Management

Research and Study Skills (ILSC) 1

This module aims to help students to develop their academic English, communication, research, and critical reasoning skills to be successful undergraduate students. A subsidiary aim of this module is to ensure that students develop transferable skills that help them to take responsibility for their personal, academic and professional development.

Assessment: Presentation, group work, written assessments

Accounting for Business

This course strives to introduce students to the fundamentals of financial and management accounting.  Accounting is of critical importance when supporting all business activities and this module has been designed to introduce the basic concepts on which accounting is based.  Thus, providing students with a basic toolkit for understanding the financial side of business performance and financial decision-making problems that a business may face.

Assessment: Mid-term test, examination

Marketing

The module aims to provide an in-depth examination of contemporary issues faced by marketing managers. By the end of the module the students should be competent in managing and designing improvement in marketing processes in practice.

Assessment: Examination

Essential Analytic Skills for Business

The module will provide an overview of the mathematical and statistical methods necessary for management / finance/economics analysis, focusing specifically on the use of computer packages (primarily SPSS) to conduct statistical analysis.

Assessment: Coursework

Finance for Business

The aim of the module is to introduce the structure and functions of financial systems along with some fundamental concepts and principles in corporate finance. Specifically, the role played by financial intermediaries, various types of financial securities and financial markets in the financial system will be explained. Topics covered include the objectives of financial management, time value of money, choosing between investment alternatives and risk and return.

Managing People

This module provides students with knowledge of the fundamental aspects associated with the organisation and management of people. It offers extensive considerations in terms of the importance and associated issues relating to effective management.

Assessment: Group work, examination

The Global Context of Organisations

This module introduces students to key issues within the global context for organisation. Developing an understanding of how organisation is shaped by global contexts and how organisation shapes global contexts enables students to better understand external forces upon organisations and organising.

Assessment: Coursework, presentation

Operations Management

Designed to introduce students to contemporary theoretical conceptualisations that underlie the framing of issues encountered by operations managers, directors of public and private organisations This course provides an in depth assessment on how such individuals and organisations operate in an effective manner.

Assessment: Group work, examination

 

Economics

Principles of Micro-economics

This module provides a rigorous understanding of basic micro-economic principles by combining theory and application to contemporary issues, such that students have a sound basis for progression to study economics at Level 5.

Mathematical Techniques for Economics

This module provides students with a comprehensive knowledge of mathematical tools used in the analysis of economic problems. The importance of these methods is demonstrated by their application to a range of traditional economic problems, for example, utility and profit maximisation.

Assessment: In-class test, examination

Accounting for Economics

Accounting is of critical importance in support of all business activities so this course is designed to introduce the basic concepts on which accounting is based, providing students with a toolkit that enables a better understanding of the performance of businesses and the decisions and problems they face.

Assessment: Mid-term test, examination

Approaches to Economic Analysis

The module outlines the principal aspects of modern economic analysis, the relationship to other approaches within science, and provides coverage of the nature and purpose of economic models, and of the distinctions to be drawn between theoretical, empirical and experimental work. The module allows students to have alternative perspectives that go beyond the mainstream ‘economic theory’.

Assessment: Group work, examination

Current Issues in Economics

As an introduction to applied economics, this module aims to show how basic economic concepts and methods can be used to provide insight and policy recommendations on a variety of topical economic issues. The module aims to complement the more technical delivery of economic theory with a broader appreciation of where economics has a role to play in explaining social outcomes.

Principles of Macro-economics

This module provides a rigorous understanding of basic macro-economic principles by combining theory and application to contemporary issues, such that students have a sound basis for progression to further study in the field of economics.

Finance for Economics

Providing students with an understanding of structure and functions of financial systems, and introducing them to quantitative techniques used in investment and financial decision making at a basic level this module is aimed at non-specialists.

Assessment: In-class test, examination

Exploring Economic Data

The module will provide an overview of the statistical methods necessary for economic analysis, focusing specifically on the use of computer packages to conduct statistical analysis. The module aims to prepare students to undertake statistical analysis for economic purposes.
