The BSc (Hons) Football Development and Performance programme is ideal for those with a keen interest in community development through football, from grass-roots to performance. If you aspire to become a qualified football coach, the programme will give you the opportunity to gain recognised coaching awards, such as the FA Level 1 and 2.
The course aims to help you become a fully inclusive and reflective football development strategist and coach by introducing elements of sport development, policy and the sport sciences. The programme also includes a number of opportunities to network and gain work experience with local community groups, schools and National Governing Bodies.
The (BSc) Hons Football Development and Performance focuses on the contextual and operational challenges facing the football industry and will help guide you through the process of how to engage with communities in order to contribute to the betterment of people’s lives through football. You will be given the opportunity to gain recognised coaching awards, such as the FA Level 1 and FA Level 2, building on your coaching repertoire beyond football. You will learn how to establish and maintain networks, organise and run sports events and initiatives, and create, implement and evaluate important sport policy concerning such things as health, social inclusion and crime and anti-social behaviours.

We’ll also prepare you for work beforehand, with special Skills for Work training, further boosting your CV, and building skills employers will value. In recognition of the value we place on these skills we have incorporated this experience into your study time.
Bucks New University has a strong reputation for delivering vocational sport courses and is a pioneer in football-related studies. We work closely with football partners including Wycombe Wanderers Football Club, Wycombe Wanderers Sports and Education Trust and Watford Football Club, so you will learn both within the University and ‘in the field’. You will also benefit by having access to the University’s modern, well-equipped human performance laboratory. The course includes a compulsory placement at Level 5, and you will also have the opportunity for a placement year coaching abroad through our football partners which includes US-based soccer schools.
Across the programme you will benefit from regular contact through: lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and practical sessions. You will be assessed through a combination of coursework, such as essays, reports and a portfolio, as well as practical assessments that include individual and group presentations.
The course includes modules to develop both industry and academic skills, and at Level 6, students will take an employability module.
Employment opportunities include football coaching roles, community coaching positions, performance analysts, football development officers and managers, as well as development roles in sports other than football. Successful graduates could expect to work within football clubs, local authorities (county and district councils). National Governing Bodies, including the FA and county FAs, and County Sport Partnerships. There also may be opportunities to work in education, in schools, colleges and universities. For those who wish to extend their studies at the end of their degree, opportunities to study at Masters Level, and beyond, are encouraged.
