Reasons to study Business Management in the Creative Industries at DMU:

The creative industries are made up of businesses and entrepreneurs that have creativity and content that is protected by copyright as a central part of their business model. The creative industries include sectors such as design, film and TV, publishing, the performing arts, music, advertising and gaming.

Creative workers and leaders exhibit different skills and approaches to other business sectors, and individuals with creative talent require business management skills to develop as professionals in the creative industries. The Business Management in the Creative Industries MSc is uniquely positioned to help students learn how to respond to these evolving challenges.

This is a business management degree customised for the creative industries. Students are supported in developing their professional potential, whilst gaining valuable industry contacts, executive work placements, and the professional skill sets required to excel in the creative industries.

The programme benefits from the location of being a short walk away from Leicester’s Cultural Quarter, and from close working relationships with creative organisations. Local creative workers and companies co-teach on the programme and offer creative industry mentoring and executive placements to boost your employability in the field.

Based at De Montfort University, there are opportunities to develop wider technical skills through access to specialist areas in the Faculty of Art, Design and Humanities and the Institute of Creative Technologies. There are also ways for you to tailor your university experience to your interests such as opportunities to get involved with our #DMUglobal international experience programmes and the university’s volunteering programmes.

Structure and assessment


Course modules

  • Business of the Creative Industry Company
    This module provides students with an overview of the creative industries and their contribution to the creative economy. It will examine how creative businesses operate, how they can thrive, and what factors are important for driving their success. On completion of the module, students will be able to understand the key drivers to building and managing a successful creative business.
  • Understanding Communication in a Globalised World
    This module introduces you to sociolinguistic and intercultural theory, which is applied to business, professional, and social settings. As a highly international and networked field, developing professional skills to operate in different creative industries settings requires a critical awareness and understanding of culture and communication in different contexts.
  • Strategic Management
    This module explores strategic management concepts and frameworks with key theoretical approaches to challenge convention in the field. You will learn about perspectives on strategy, performance objectives, strategic innovation and managing strategic change.
  • Knowing and Developing Yourself for Professional Practice
    This module introduces the student to personal development planning, and in reflecting upon oneself as a basis for development leadership and talent management.
  • Business of the Creative Industries Environment
    This module provides students with an overview of the creative industries and their contribution to the creative economy. It will explore the relationship between creativity, business, and key operating environments. On completion of the module, students will be able to understand the key drivers to building an environment conducive to thriving creative business activities.
  • Leadership and Culture in Organisational Contexts
    This module introduces students to the leadership, management, and talent development issues faced by organisations. It aims to develop the critical people management skills and knowledge considered to be necessary for existing and aspiring managers to nurture talent effectively. Attention is paid to key features of the internal and external operating environments which shape leadership practice.

And a choice of two elective modules:

  • Research Methods
    This module provides an introduction to designing and delivering research in the creative industries, and assists students in developing practical techniques in conducting interviews and questionnaires, and undertaking qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
  • Cultural Policy and Planning
    This module introduces students to cultural policy; the theory and practical applications of cultural policy and planning, and impact on aspects of economic development, social inclusion, and place promotion.
  • The Business of the Performing Arts
    This module will provide an understanding of the business models that support the performing arts, focusing on theatre, music and musical theatre. You will analyse the conditions necessary for a performing arts business to succeed and evaluate the sustainability of performing arts organisations.
  • Creative Technologies
    This module focuses on leading digital technologies and impact on the creative industries, providing an understanding of current possibilities and what may be possible in the future. This module will explore the context of digital cultures, convergence and pervasive media, interactive technologies, audiences, collaborative practice and commissioning and curating digital work.
  • Managing Business Web Presence
    This module provides students with a practical knowledge of web design, including knowledge of initiation of web design, and the design and use of web sites in the business environment. Students will have the opportunity to work with a company in building a portfolio as a solution to an existing web problem, and leading to a proposal for a commercial web offering.
  • Management of Innovation in the Creative Industries
    Examine the process and management models for innovation in different creative industry disciplines. The module has a particular focus on how innovation occurs and is managed, and analyses the relationship between creative entrepreneurs, creative workers, and artists in terms of their effect on innovation.

Either

  • Executive Company Project 
    This project offers an opportunity to complete a practical management project in the workplace, so you can link theory to practice and develop practical skills for leadership. You will research a management issue provided by a sponsoring organisation, supported by both academic and work-based supervisors, while engaging with the business world.

Or

  • Creative Research Project
    This project provides the opportunity to develop and demonstrate skills acquired from the taught course in the creation, development and realisation of a negotiated creative research project. Typically, students develop either a prototype for a new commercialisation project, or develop activity such as an exhibition or crowdsourcing campaign.
  • Consulting Project
    This project offers students the opportunity to complete a 3 month consultancy project on a live business case. Students will critically apply knowledge gained over the period of their study and have a real impact on a local company/employer.

Creative Start-Up Residency

Leicester Castle Business School, in conjunction with strategic partners in Leicester, will be offering a 9-months residency to one successful creative graduate to set-up a new creative business in Leicester. The residency, with a combined package of support of £10,000, will commence in September/October 2018 . Find out more.


Facilities and features


Leicester Castle

Originally built in approximately 1150, and then extensively rebuilt in approximately 1523, the Great Hall has recently undergone a restoration project. Under the leadership of Professor Dana Brown, Leicester Castle Business School is based in the historical setting of Leicester Castle, enhanced by a £4.2 million refurbishment, and is here to meet the needs of 21st century business.

Going Beyond Business As Usual, we offer an accessible learning environment that invites you to challenge convention while also providing you with the opportunity and tools to think, create and inspire. With our engaging networking opportunities and inspirational setting, we aim to provide you with not just a qualification but a transformational experience.

Students will also be taught in the Hugh Aston Building, which was purpose-built at a cost of £35 million. Facilities include break-out spaces for group work; quiet study zones for individual work, high-spec IT labs and a cafe. Learning will be supported by access to DMU’s excellent facilities.

Library services

The main Kimberlin Library is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (other than in exceptional circumstances) and offers a huge range of online resources, all of which can be remotely accessed from anywhere you choose.

The library is run by dedicated staff who offer additional support to students, including help with academic writing, research strategies, literature searching and reference management and assistive technology, and mathematical skills for non-maths students. There is also a Just Ask service for help and advice, available via email or telephone.

Learning zones

Our Learning Zones and the The Greenhouse also provide space for group or individual work and study.

There are 1,600 study places across all library locations, more than 700 computer stations, laptops to borrow, free wi-fi and desktop power outlets.

You can also book rooms with plasma screens, laptops and DVD facilities for group work and presentations, secure an individual study room with adjustable lighting or make use of our assistive technology.
