Through the exploration of related concepts, practices, materials and history this course examines Fine Art and broader contemporary visual practices. You will develop essential skills and knowledge in a variety of 2D, 3D, digital and time-based practices and engage in critical aesthetic and conceptual debates. You will explore visual, social, cultural, environmental and political diversity that can be expressed through your developing art practice.
You will meet professionals involved in curating, critiquing and producing contemporary art. You will gain proficiency in presenting your work to professional standards, including portfolio production and skills in networking, exhibiting and marketing.
As well as gaining insights and skills linked to a variety of media you will engage with a wide range of aesthetic and conceptual debates. You will explore identity and diversity, political environmental social and cultural themes that can be expressed through your developing practice as a contemporary artist. The course will prepare you to be a professional artist working in the contemporary visual arts alongside artists designers and other creative practitioners.
You will come in contact with a number of professionals involved in producing, curating, and critiquing contemporary art. You will gain confidence and proficiency in presenting your work to professional standards, including portfolio production and skills in networking, exhibiting and marketing. You will be able work individually and in teams, working with other creative practitioners in art and design, as well as with other discipline areas including science, education, society and culture, health and well-being, and the built environment.
Employability skills are integrated into the course and provide you with an awareness of the real-world context of the creative industries in general, and Contemporary Art Practice in particular. You will be helped to develop a strategy for obtaining appropriate employment at the end of your course.
Professional practice will be emphasised as part of all learning units, but a dedicated work-related learning unit, will specifically help you to become more focused on managing your career. You will be helped with the preparation of a professional portfolio; including a professional promotion pack, portfolio, website, a CV (curriculum vitae) and social media skills needed to promote yourself in a social mediated art and design world.
