With its strong industry links, this course will prepare you for a range of dance-related careers. You will also benefit from great facilities that have contributed to DMU being recognised as a Centre for Excellence in Performance Arts, reflecting our commitment to innovative and excellent teaching and learning.
Intellectually and artistically demanding, it offers daily dance classes in contemporary techniques, ballet for contemporary dancers, and fusion and improvisation. In your second year you can choose to specialise your studies in performance and choreography or education and community.
Dance: Performance and Choreography is designed to give students an in-depth knowledge of performance and choreographic practices and develop their technical and artistic skills. Our successful graduates work as performers, choreographers, dance practitioners and producers.
The aim of Dance: Education and Community is to help students wishing to teach and lead dance to gain a thorough knowledge of arts education and dance pedagogy. DMU graduates have landed roles as teachers in primary, secondary and tertiary education and as community dance practitioners and project managers.

- Gain industry experience and contacts with daily classes from our extensive network of professional dance artists and companies.
- Boost your exposure in the field through our excellent links with local, national and international dance organisations and artists such as Maverick TV, Akram Khan Company and Serendipity Arts.
- Real-life experience is offered though a placement module in your final year where you can gain valuable knowledge with a professional organisation or artist of your choice, with support from a mentor. Students have recently worked with Moving Together, Fuelled Dance Theatre and New Art Club.
- DMU is recognised as a Centre for Excellence in Performance Arts with great facilities providing specialist studios and rehearsal spaces designed specifically for dance and performance learning activities.
- Our graduates are creative, entrepreneurial practitioners who are able to respond to the ever-changing demands of the current dance profession. Previous graduates have gone on to a variety of work and performance opportunities, including a role as the head of dance, performing in music videos, and participating in Channel 4’s First Acts and Let’s Dance International Frontiers festival.
- Take part in our international experience programme, DMU Global. Students have benefited from trips to the University Dance Festival in Kiev, Ukraine, and to performance venues in New York, furthering their international outlook and shaping their creative ideas.
- Benefit from the cutting edge research and practice carried out by Dance staff in the Research Institute of Drama, Dance and Performance Studies Research.

Facilities and features
Dance Studios
DMU offers some of the finest facilities in the sector to support your studies. You will be taught in superb, fully equipped dance studios and performance spaces in the Performing Arts Centre for Excellence (PACE) and the Campus Centre. DMU has 2 fully equipped studio theatre spaces and a multi-disciplinary performance space that is often used to support live-digital work. A further 2 dance studios are located on the top floor of the PACE building with sprung floors, dance floor, mirrors and barres.
Library
The main Kimberlin Library is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (other than in exceptional circumstances) and offers a huge range of online resources, all of which can be remotely accessed from anywhere you choose.
The library is run by dedicated staff who offer additional support to students, including help with academic writing, research strategies, literature searching and reference management and assistive technology, and mathematical skills for non-maths students. There is also a Just Ask service for help and advice, available via email or telephone.
Links with industry
You will benefit from our excellent links with local, national and international dance organisations and artists such as Dance4 International Centre for Choreography; People Dancing Foundation for Community Dance; Serendipity Arts, Akram Khan Company, and Maverick TV; and many others who contribute to teaching and offer opportunities for student internships and work experience.
Opportunities and careers
Placements
The final year Placement module supports you to gain valuable real-life experience in a professional setting with an artistic, education or community organisation of your choice.
You will be supervised by a member of Dance staff and liaise with the University’s Work Based Learning Unit to negotiate your placement with a dance, arts or educational organisation.
Students have recently worked with Akram Khan, Moving Together, Forward Thinking Movement and Dance, Fuelled Dance Theatre, New Art Club and Serendipity Arts, as well as securing teaching placements in schools and colleges.

#DMUglobal provides opportunities to enhance your understanding and experience of contemporary dance as an international art form.
Recent #DMUglobal dance trips included a visit to the Spring Dance and Theatre Festival in the beautiful city of Utrecht, Holland. Students saw cutting edge performances, took part in workshops and discussion and made their own video responses which were screened on the festival’s own website.
DMU dance students visited Ahmedabad in the Indian state of Gujarat, where they provided a dance activity programme for the children of the Gandhi Ashram and the local community. Led by DMU dance graduate Emily Bolton (Moving Together’s Dance Director), the programme helped the children learn a wide variety of dance styles, as well as develop their creativity and produce theoretical work.
Graduate careers
Our dance graduates are creative, entrepreneurial practitioners who are able to respond to the ever changing demands of the current dance profession. They are equipped to successfully work in a range of dance-related careers as educators, performers, choreographers and managers, producers.
Students have gone on to work as heads of school and college dance departments, university lecturers, community dance practitioners, a former Director of Dance at Arts Council England and award-winning choreographers, such as Akram Khan. Some graduates choose to progress on to post-graduate study and doctoral research.
