The course helps to develop knowledge and capabilities in the key areas of strategic management, leadership, finance, risk analysis, project management, supply chain management, quality, lean and agile operations, sustainability and environmental management.
We will introduce you to all the key aspects and challenges of managing a company across a wide range of business, commercial, industrial and service sectors to provide you with the opportunity to develop an integrated understanding of strategic and operational management. For example, using strategic decision making, risk analysis and environmental impact tools, we will consider the importance of business decisions and the leadership skills that influence business success.
You should develop a range of management, intellectual and personal skills – including communication, cultural awareness, team working, objective setting, leadership, consultancy, presentation skills and digital literacy – required for operational effectiveness and success. We will also introduce you to a range of analytical tools and techniques, such as data gathering and analysis, problem solving, critical evaluation and structured report writing, so that you can develop skills to research, analyse and solve complex problems.
Why choose this course?
In the UK alone, the industrial sector contributes £455 billion to the UK economy and employs 5.5 million. Increasingly complex and large-scale projects, like the Airbus A380 project or the development of a new vehicle platform for Jaguar Land Rover, require careful management to stay on track against budgets and deadlines to succeed.
This course is designed to enable students to broaden skillsets with a range of engineering management and leadership skills. The subjects are all taught within the context of business and engineering management with case studies and real-life examples taken from industry, like Dell Computers and Nissan Cars.
Many of the modules adopt our activity-led learning approach, in which students investigate problems from industry and draw down the knowledge to solve them through research and analysis. This also develops transferrable skills, including team work, which are essential in engineering and business management and for future leadership roles.
This highly focused course has been developed in consultation with our impressive network of industry partners, including Jaguar Land Rover, Aston Martin, UNIPART, SAIC, Prodrive, Airbus, Tata, GKN, Ricardo and MIRA. We also work closely with relevant professional bodies – Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Association for Project Management (APM) – to keep our curriculum relevant and topical.
The course also aims to draw on the industrial experience of members of our academic staff who have worked as operations managers, project managers and supply chain managers in such companies as General Electric, Ford and Rolls Royce, as well as conducting research in areas such as the application of Industry 4.0 solutions to the manufacturing, operations and supply chain management challenges faced by industry.
International experience opportunities
In addition to the international field trips and student mobility opportunities provided by our Global Leaders Programme (GLP), we are investigating the possibility of introducing Online International Learning (OIL) projects, which have proved highly popular across other courses within the University, providing the chance to collaborate on projects with students on similar courses throughout the world.
Job satisfaction is excellent with high employer demand in most parts of the world for graduates who are educated in engineering, especially for individuals who are able to link theory and practice through the right blend of underpinning knowledge, skills and capabilities.
