Overview
Study a Petroleum and Environmental Technology MSc and explore how to safely manage projects in this rigorously reviewed industry.
This course aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the technical operation of the petroleum industry, together with some of the sector’s most important environmental issues – such as oil spillages, climate change and renewable energies.
Course content has been developed in collaboration with our Industry Liaison Panel, which currently includes long-standing members of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. Our current extensive links enable us to offer a programme of expert speakers through the free to attend oil and gas seminar series, which has previously featured the former Vice President of BP (Engineering), Honorary Guests from Imperial College London and a former President of SPE International. Our connections have also led to the donation by Schlumberger of industry standard PETREL and ECLIPSE reservoir simulation software, worth US$15 million, giving you access to the same technology used by big multinational oil companies like Shell, BP and ExxonMobil.

Course information
Based around the development of your individual practice, the core ethos of this master’s is to enable you to harness your personal development and creative ambitions. We want to help you discover what kind of artist you want to be, so that you can flourish within the scope of contemporary painting and the broader cultural realm.
During the course, you will take two dedicated painting modules in which you will develop your personal painting practice. We aim to extend your knowledge of paint as a material and process, introducing a range of disparate approaches to painting – from realism to abstraction, material to conceptual.
Guided and supported by accomplished practitioners, you will test and explore a range of ideas and issues relating to the traditions of painting. We encourage you to work in a range of media, including paint media, print, photography and digital technologies, as appropriate and depending on your own interests.
You will also undertake modules in contextual studies and professional practice, which are part of the wider Creative Arts MA programme in the Design and Visual Arts section of the School of Art and Design. These modules help you contextualise your practice, gain research skills and undertake professional activity.
The course culminates with the common MA Project module, which comprises one-third of the course and takes the form of a personal project. Your final project will be tailored to your own area of professional practice and your personal creative passion, which will form the basis of an exhibition of your work in the end-of-year MA Degree Show. With a view to developing your professional profile, these shows are open to the public and attended by curators and other art world professionals.
Why choose this course?
Coventry has a long history of teaching all aspects of engineering technology, from automotive to aerospace. This professionally accredited master’s degree* is currently taught by staff with national and international experience of oil companies and oil and gas service providers in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia and New Zealand.
The course covers both the key technical components of the upstream petroleum industry, as well as complementary expertise in some of the emerging environmental concerns. This gives you the opportunity to graduate as an oil and gas specialist with an environmental bias, much valued by potential employers.
You will be exposed to the major components of the upstream operation including: reservoir engineering, reservoir simulation, drilling engineering and petroleum processing and gas technologies. In addition, you could gain a solid understanding of the environmental impacts of oil and gas projects, providing the opportunity to develop skills in environmental monitoring and how to manage environmental pollution, such as oil spill response and remediation, water and waste water treatment.
We offer modern facilities, including training in sector-leading PETREL and ECLIPSE reservoir simulation software and Petex Integrated Product Modelling (IPM), which is used by over 350 oil and gas companies across the world and was donated to us by Petex.
*This course is accredited by the Energy Institute for the 2021/22 intake. If the accreditation of [this course AND/OR the modules on this course] change, we would seek to notify applicants and students as soon as possible.
