Overview
Whether it’s TV, video, radio, or social media content, technology has led the media industry to develop a focus on digital and technical mediums and formats.
Media Production is an industry-focused course, which provides you with the technical foundations and practical skills required for a career in a rapidly changing media landscape, enabling you to pursue roles in industries such as advertising, TV and radio production, journalism and PR.
Teaching modules include image capture and processing, audio recording and production, television documentary production, radio location production, creative media entrepreneurship and social media innovation.

Media Production students recently learned about Berlin’s fascinating media history on a trip to the city, took part in documentary film production in Bali and went behind the scenes at New York’s NBC Studios.
Structure and assessment
First year
- Image Capture and Processing
This module introduces you to photography and video acquisition, digitisation, compression and storage. - Audio Capture and Processing
Two 12-week segments introduce learners to the essentials of sound recording, processing and outputting: in audio production, microphone types and selection for specific tasks, to studio and location-based recording, and compositing in multi-track environments within Adobe Audition; prior learning is applied further within radio production, where learners gather real-world content using location equipment and radio studio facilities, before delivering material using RCS Zetta, DMU’s industry-standard radio playout system

The module introduces animation and multimedia concepts for web based formats, including web design and publishing, and animation techniques
Second year
Core Modules
- Television Studio Production
The module provides an overview of television production systems, processes and standards. You will learn in our on-site television studios, gaining more hands-on experience in television production. - Video and Imaging Techniques
This module explores the process of still and moving digital image production from the initial capture, through editing to display and distribution

The audio recording studio is used in the creation of a range of ‘live’ recording scenarios, developing recording skills in the multichannel recording studio - Radio Studio Production
This module gives you the opportunity to develop audio recordings for radio, while learning about the principles, techniques and practices of radio production. You will use our broadcast-standard radio production studios and get involved with Demon FM, our community radio station

This module explores advanced techniques in multimedia animation production for the Internet and disc-based formats. Multimedia authoring software will be used to demonstrate advanced animation and multimedia techniques - Radio Location Production
In this module you will study the theory and practice of radio studio operation, the management of studio resources, the use and deployment of radio studio technologies, and the regulatory and legal framework related to the broadcast industry - Creative Media Entrepreneurship
This module gives you the opportunity to develop business and management skills as a producer of media content for the broadcast and online media industries
Facilities and features
Creative Technology Studios
Our multi-million pound Creative Technology Studios feature a host of industry standard video, audio and radio production suites and two fully equipped recording studios featuring analogue and digital recording systems and surround sound monitoring.
The studios provide facilities for the acquisition, editing and distribution of video, audio and computer-generated materials and files can be shared throughout the studios via a fast computer network, enabling a seamless mixed-media workflow.
The film studios located in the Queens building makes available multi-camera, blue screen and green screen studios for all students on our media courses. The green screen and blue screen facilities enable students to create videos that take advantage of colour keying to merge video with computer graphics, stock video and still images.
The multi-camera studio replicates the most common setup for TV studios and enables students to practice techniques covering all of the areas of studio work including presenting, camera work, direction, lighting and sound. The film studios also includes a full lighting setup and a viewing gallery so that cameras and presenters can receive direction from the students taking the role of a producer. Using live graphic overlays students can successfully replicate news, shopping channel and chat show environments.
Specifically, the facilities include:
- Industry-standard video, audio and radio production suites
- A suite of over 20 High-Definition (HD) video workstations, using the very latest industry-standard HD editing software
- Television studios with HD video cameras, green-screen and virtual-studio capabilities
- Two fully-equipped recording studios, featuring analogue and digital recording systems and surround sound monitoring
- Broadcast-standard radio production studios with professional playout and management systems
- Audio and video laboratories with high specification test equipment for signal analysis
- Fused-media and motion-capture studios for the teaching and research of 3D image capture, modelling and display
- A high-speed, high-definition, data backbone, enabling the integration of audio, video and computer-generated media projects Hybrid technologies, using the best of current analogue and digital media.

The Media Production graduate has landed a job as Assistant Producer at Global, a British media company which owns some of the country’s best-loved radio stations including Heart, Capital FM, Classic FM and Radio X.
