Overview
Empower and support patients in their journey to recovery. Join our full-time, NMC-validated Mental Health Nursing degree course, and develop practical skills and knowledge with a range of clinical placements. Study in our cutting-edge skill laboratories in Cambridge or Chelmsford, and become a part of our nurturing nursing community. When you graduate, you’ll be ready to start your career as a registered mental health nurse.
Mental health nursing is a challenging but rewarding field. As a qualified nurse you will identify people’s needs before planning and providing care. You’ll work with your clients, encouraging them to believe that recovery from mental health problems is possible. We are dedicated to the continual improvement of every aspect of healthcare and delivering the values set out in the NHS Constitution.
Our Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) approved course mixes classroom learning in our clinical facilities and practical placements. We will consider the experiences of people with mental health issues from different age groups, cultures, belief systems and ethnicities. We’ll also look at the experiences of carers and care-givers; and learn how the law – including human rights legislation – affects the management of mental health.
Biological, psychological and social factors can all have an impact on mental health and illness. Our understanding of causes and ‘triggers’ is changing all the time, so we’ll keep up to date with the latest knowledge – as well as the different interventions used to help people. Since mental health nursing is very much about connecting with people, you’ll also enhance your ‘softer’ communication and people skills.
Most mental health nurses work in the community, but some provide in-patient care. Either way, it is standard practice to work as part of a team of health and care professionals. As part of your studies, you will develop your team working skills and gain practical experience in mental health settings, both in the community and in hospital. While on placements, you will work shifts with your mentor and will need to arrange your own transport. You will participate in late, early and night shifts and will work at weekends and bank holidays. Visit our placement maps page to plan your travel.
Teaching on campus takes place between 9am and 7pm, Monday to Friday. Each year, you will have seven weeks’ holiday at set periods.
Careers
We work with employers to make sure you graduate with the knowledge, skills and abilities they need. They help us review what we teach and how we teach it – and they offer hands-on, practical opportunities to learn through work-based projects, internships or placements.
On successful completion of your course, you will be able to register and practise as a mental health nurse. This is because our course meets the standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
You’ll graduate with the confidence you need to work in this challenging but rewarding field. Besides the necessary clinical expertise, you will have developed your people skills and be an effective team member. As a registered mental health nurse, you could work in the community or a hospital. You might choose a role in acute in-patient care, assertive outreach, home treatment, early intervention, or a community mental health team. Assessment
We use a range of methods to help ensure you are making the right level of progress during the course. Besides exams, they include essays, presentations, care studies and practice assessment.
