The demand for quality healthcare is increasing, as rapid advances in treatments and information technologies magnify the expectations of patients and healthcare professionals. At the same time resources are limited as governments trim their healthcare budgets.
Healthcare leaders now need skills in human and financial resources management, leadership, strategic planning and organisational design, an ability to manage complex change, and organisational decision-making. Our MBA gives you the opportunity to develop these skills, while at the same time enhancing your capacity to analyse and understand the complex nature of healthcare, and how it is delivered.
Our MBA will suit you if you’re a recent graduate, or a professional with experience of working in the health and/or social care sector. Develop your skills and knowledge and open up a range of career opportunities in senior management and leadership roles, in the UK or around the world.
We recognise the need for a series of exit points which support your personal and professional requirements, and those of the healthcare sector. You can therefore study for a full Masters, or the intermediate awards of Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma. Our MBA is made up of a series of compulsory modules; optional modules are not available. This is to ensure the integrity of the MBA core aims is retained.

Enabling Leadership in Health Care
Health and Social Care is continuingly striving to improve itself and attain excellence against a backcloth of relentless change. The ability to accept and thrive during rapid and turbulent change as an inevitable consequence of life is a pre-requisite for organisational survival. This ability of organisations to adopt change rather than merely adapt to it is one of the major hall marks of a learning organisation. In these organisations, organisational learning becomes the mechanism by which organisational competencies can keep pace with national, local or international challenges. Change is inevitable, and it is readily accepted that to remain the same increases organisational risk, however, applying change management strategies to complex and high challenge organisations can be a difficult yet an essential task in today’s pursuit of organisational efficiencies. The role of the leader in setting the context for delivery of services in the health sector, whether in acute, primary or the voluntary sector, is key to successful enterprises. The leader has a vital role in promoting the environment in which change can flourish. This module will explore the complexity of the health sector, particularly in large hospitals. The use of hard and soft approaches will be explored along with the use of technologies and management information systems to support both clinical care and the organisational context. The support of the management of change through people will be a recurrent theme that will encourage a journey of self discovery based on emotional intelligence. -
Finance, Accounting and Marketing in Health Care
Finance, accounting and marketing are business skills which are becoming increasingly important throughout health care and a fundamental requirement of any senior manager, leader or decision makers within the sector. This module examines these areas from traditional approaches used in the private and public sectors, and then builds on this underpinning to consider contemporary approaches, including those relevant to third sector health care provision. Participants are taught techniques for making revenue and capital decisions. -
Advancing Professional Decision Making
The module is tailored to respond to the challenges and issues faced by health and social care professionals, managers and leaders in contemporary health and social care services worldwide. It has a healthcare management orientation, drawing on management theory and cutting-edge research. The module provides introduction to important topics such as organisational behaviour, organisational decision making, entrepreneurship, innovation, health economics and health information systems and support you in applying this knowledge within your work environment. The skills you develop by applying this knowledge will enable you to influence the service development and enhance the effectiveness, efficiency and quality of service provision in your area. -
Research Studies
Designed to provide you with a critical overview of the main methodologies and designs applied to research within health and social care, professional practice, regulation and policy. It provides you with an opportunity to explore the theoretical dilemmas that underlie the process of inquiry and its relationship to practice. The module will provide a framework within which to select, evaluate and justify the research methods chosen for your research project. -
Strategy Health Care Management
The development and implementation of a coherent corporate strategy is one of the main measures of success for an organisation. Strategy is a critical feature of the organisations wellbeing. It establishes organisational direction, service intentions and resource commitment. It is the organisations blueprint for both survival and expansion. Understanding the nature and activities associated with strategy development and implementation is a key knowledge requirement for those in health service management. This module will provide exposure into the factors influencing the formulation, development and implementation of hospital and associated health sector strategy. -
Major Project
The major project is of central importance to the Masters award. The Health Management and Health Informatics major project provides you with an opportunity to write a significant piece of academic work on a Healthcare Management topic. It is a systematic review providing an analysis of a specific research question relevant to healthcare management or health informatics, using (1) the research skills and academic skills they have developed and (2) the knowledge you have gained during the course. You are encouraged to choose a topic that has arisen from material or issues they have studied during the course. However this need not always be the case as you may wish to identify a topic related to your planned career, past work experience or form a contemporary emerging issue in healthcare management or health informatics.
Assessment
Your work is assessed through a variety of methods including seminar, group and individual presentations, virtual learning discussion boards with assessed components, mixed methods such as case review presentations with written commentary, and a final research application activity to conclude the course.
Please note that you will need to complete all of the above core modules. This course does not have any optional modules. Modules are subject to change and availability.
