COURSE OVERVIEW
Birkbeck’s BSc Computing with Foundation Year provides a perfect route to study for those who do not meet the entry requirements for direct entry to an undergraduate computing degree, who do not feel they are quite ready for an undergraduate degree, or who are returning to study after a significant break and need extra help and support.
The Foundation Year helps build confidence and provide skills to study successfully at undergraduate level. It also provides you with a strong foundation in the main subject areas of computing.
Upon successful completion of the Foundation Year, you will automatically progress to our three-year, full-time evening study BSc Computing. The BSc focuses on key software development skills, including algorithms and data structures, systems analysis and design, programming, software testing and project management.
HIGHLIGHTS
Our Foundation Year programmes will fully prepare you for undergraduate study and are ideal if you returning to study after a gap, or if you have not previously studied the relevant subjects, or if you didn’t achieve the grades you need for a place on your chosen undergraduate degree. Upon successful completion of the Foundation Year, you will automatically progress to our three-year, full-time evening study BSc Computing. Accredited by the British Computer Society. The Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at Birkbeck is one of the first computing departments established in the UK; we celebrated our 60th anniversary in 2017. We provide a stimulating teaching and research environment for both part-time and full-time students. Our world-class research activity informs our teaching and our interactions with business, public and third-sector organisations. We have four modern computing laboratories in the Department, with a total of 133 workstations. The labs have projection facilities and are air-conditioned. Our wide range of software runs on a number of platforms including Unix, Windows and Linux. The local area network is a switched gigabit/10gigabit ethernet. The Department and College computers are connected to the SuperJANET academic network via the London Metropolitan Network. Departmental computer services and networks are managed and supported by the Department’s Systems Group.
COURSE STRUCTURE
For the Foundation Year, you take seven compulsory modules at Levels 3 and 4, worth 15 or 30 credits each, to a total of 120 credits. If you successfully complete these modules, you will automatically advance on to the three-year, full-time evening study BSc Computing.
