Overview
The FdSc Assistant Practitioner (Nursing) is designed to develop healthcare assistants to develop their roles and knowledge base. You will be working in your existing role while studying and applying learning to the work environment. Completion of the course can lead to a career in nursing.
Our course prepares students to be responsive, innovative and future thinking health care practitioners. The course aims to raise individuals’ awareness of care and the promotion of health and well-being for individuals. The curriculum includes an emphasis on treating individuals with dignity and respect, awareness of cultural and other factors that influence care delivery and well-being and developing interpersonal skills, analytical and leadership skills in order to develop as skilled workers. The content includes development of understanding how Health Care is delivered within the UK and the range of factors that influence that delivery. The overarching aim is for individuals to deliver holistic care in partnership with service users, their families, carers and other professionals and organisations, supporting this through applying evidence based practice.
Alongside this, as with other courses at the same level there is the underpinning need to enable students to develop academically, through acquiring graduate level skills and meet employability agendas. The inclusion of study skills and communication skills aims to enhance individual’s life-long learning and transferable skills. The content of the modules develops understanding of the field of nursing and develops how the student examines, evaluates and applies theories and concepts. The range of assessment methods enables students to acquire skills in managing and presenting information in a variety of formats.
Throughout our course students will be expected to manage their own learning and develop their knowledge base and presentation skills. This will include the use of portfolios, e-learning, on-line materials and student led seminars. Our course is work-based learning where you will be supported by your employer to complete the course. The course will be day release from work with the application of learning to the workplace a major feature of the course.

Your faculty
The Faculty of Health, Education, Medicine and Social Care is the largest in ARU, with over 7,000 students. Our Faculty is teeming with expertise and primed to meet the demand for creating health professionals, teachers, doctors, scientists and educators for the three districts we serve: Chelmsford, Cambridge and Peterborough.
We have been training undergraduates for professional roles for over 25 years, with a reputation for quality, dedication and ambition balanced with student satisfaction.
We know that to give our students the very best experiential learning, prior to getting into the workplace, simulation is second to none, for safe, realistic, learning environments. We have invested heavily in purpose built simulated wards, science labs and skills space, to support our students through their learning.
