The marine operations management course is tailor-made for those seafarers who decide to embrace a new career path, enhancing either their HND or foundation degree qualifications with the quality of excellence which an honours degree confers, but without the three years of academic study that is necessary for such a degree on a traditional university course.
Aimed at those who have already completed a foundation degree in marine operations or an HND in nautical science, this top up honours degree is designed to provide the necessary knowledge to prepare graduates to respond to a number of career opportunities, both at sea and ashore.
The course focuses on the exciting and challenging area of shipping management and, building upon students’ existing nautical knowledge and experience, aims to provide a sound understanding of the principals of management and their application to the core functional areas of the commercial maritime industry.
Students are also encouraged to develop their personal and managerial qualities to become broadly-thinking individuals capable of effective problem solving and confident decision making.
The course is delivered via blending learning – students begin with spending 15 weeks at Solent before completing the course via distance learning over a period of up to 12 months. During this time, students are supported by their supervisors and course team. This approach provides a flexible, supporting and structured programme of study that enables serving ships’ officer to achieve a relevant higher qualification alongside their professional certificate of competency.
