Develop your knowledge, understanding and professional abilities in civil engineering. Enhance your career with our Engineering Council accredited course that leads to registration as a Chartered Engineer.
If you’re a graduate engineer or a working civil engineer, our course introduces you to the latest thinking in areas such as environmental geotechnics, Eurocodes and sustainability.
We’ll also look at management and professional practice issues, as well as forensic engineering. You’ll investigate a building failure, compile a report and develop your skills as an expert witness.
Leading experts deliver your lectures and seminars and there’ll be frequent workshops, simulations and laboratory sessions, where you can apply your growing knowledge to real-world civil engineering issues. Your major research project will involve an original dissertation on the subject of your choice.

MODULES & ASSESSMENT
Analytical TechniquesThis module will develop your understanding of the fundamental principles in continuum mechanics, and give you an appreciation of variational principles and finite-element formulation and procedures.
Conceptual DesignExplore contemporary engineering issues to develop an understanding of how construction adapts to solve the new challenges constantly encountered.
Environmental GeotechnicsYou’ll explore the importance of environmental geotechnics, and the impact on society and the environment of the interaction of ground engineering with the environment.
Foundation Design EngineeringYou’ll be introduced to the design of foundations using Eurocode 7. The principles and philosophy of the Eurocode will be discussed in terms of both shallow and deep foundations.
Forensic EngineeringYou’ll develop an understanding of the factors that contribute to the failure of structures, carry out a thorough investigation and report on the findings and act as an expert witness.
Production ManagementThis module provides you with an in-depth consideration of the specialist methods and applications required to manage modern, complex and fast-paced construction projects. The focus of the module is on the management of the productive resources used in construction and in the analysis and management of construction as a ‚process’ within a project environment.
Sustainability and Environmental ManagementHere, you will look at wider developments in environmental protection and how these affect construction, as well as how construction affects them. You will also examine the demands that greater environmental awareness places on the built environment.
Research Design and MethodsGain an in-depth understanding of the theories and methods of research and research design and develop a theoretical and practical foundation in research for your major project/dissertation. You will get an understanding of a range of approaches to research, including quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods, together with an understanding of a number of specific research methods. You will develop your knowledge of research design in order to critically consider the design for your research project, including preparing your proposal and considering ethics and ethical issues. You will develop a theoretical and practical foundation from which to develop your Masters Level Major Project/Dissertation.
Major ProjectThis module supports students in the preparation and submission of a Master’s stage project, dissertation or artefact. The Module provides the opportunity for students to select and explore in-depth, a topic that is of interest and relevant to their course in which they can develop a significant level of expertise. It enables students to: demonstrate their ability to generate significant and meaningful questions in relation to their specialism; undertake independent research using appropriate, recognised methods based on current theoretical research knowledge, critically understand method and its relationship to knowledge; develop a critical understanding of current knowledge in relation to the chosen subject and to critically analyse and evaluate information and data, which may be complex or contradictory, and draw meaningful and justifiable conclusions; develop the capability to expand or redefine existing knowledge, to develop new approaches to changing situations and/or develop new approaches to changing situations and contribute to the development of best practice; demonstrate an awareness of and to develop solutions to ethical dilemmas likely to arise in their research or professional practice; communicate these processes in a clear and elegant fashion; evaluate their work from the perspective of an autonomous reflective learner.
