Overview
There are two intakes a year for this programme – January/February and September/October. The closing date for applications for our next intake is 4th January 2022, at 4pm.
The programme consists of clinical and practice modules with real life application. The course requires minimal attendance using blended learning to meet the individual needs of students.

Students can achieve, depending on their module choice:
- Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy (60 credits)
- Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy with Independent Prescribing (60 credits)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy (120 credits)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy with Independent Prescribing (120 credits)
- Masters in Clinical Pharmacy (180 credits)
- Masters in Clinical Pharmacy with Independent Prescribing (180 credits)

Course structure
Course Structure
Certificate Year – All Core Modules
- Practice Foundations, 15 credits (nine months, studied across the whole of the certificate year)
- Clinical Foundations, 15 credits (three months)
- Clinical Practice 1, 15 credits (three months)
- Clinical Practice 2, 15 credits (three months)
Students leaving after year one will receive a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy
Diploma Year – Core Module (All students will study this module)
- Clinical Practice 3, 15 credits (three months)
Diploma Year – Optional Route One
- Public Health, 15 credits (three months)
- Quality improvement (previously known as Service Evaluation), 15 credits (three months)
- Practice Development, 15 credits (nine months, studied across the whole of the diploma year)
Students studying this route will receive a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy.
Diploma Year – Optional Route Two
- Research Methods*, 30 credits (three months)
- Public Health, 15 credits (three months)
Students studying this route will receive a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy.
Diploma Year – Optional Route Three
- Independent Prescribing*, 45 credits (six months) – Clinical Pharmacy PG Dip
Please note that the independent prescribing module has a separate entry criteria and admissions process.
Students studying this route will receive a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy with Independent Prescribing.
Masters Year
- Research Project, 60 credits (14 months) – Clinical Pharmacy MSc
Students who wish to study the Masters Year need to study optional route two during their diploma year.
*Neither the Independent Prescribing module or Research Methods module are eligible for funding under the Pharmacy Integration Fund
Facilities and features
Health and Life Sciences facilities
Investment of £12 million in Health and Life Sciences has developed our first-class teaching and learning facilities to help you develop your practical experience and theoretical knowledge beyond the classroom.
The 19th century Hawthorn Building has facilities designed to replicate current practice in health and life sciences, including contemporary analytical chemistry and formulation laboratories, audiology booths and nursing and midwifery clinical skills suites.
Purpose-built clinical skills areas allow you to apply theory to practice in a safe environment. You will receive guidance and support from staff, to ensure that your practical ability in the clinical skills suites is accurate.
Library services
The main Kimberlin Library is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (other than in exceptional circumstances) and offers a huge range of online resources, all of which can be remotely accessed from anywhere you choose.
The library is run by dedicated staff who offer additional support to students, including help with academic writing, research strategies, literature searching and reference management and assistive technology, and mathematical skills for non-maths students. There is also a Just Ask service for help and advice, available via email or telephone.
Learning zones
Our Learning Zones and the The Greenhouse also provide space for group or individual work and study.
There are 1,600 study places across all library locations, more than 700 computer stations, laptops to borrow, free wi-fi and desktop power outlets.
You can also book rooms with plasma screens, laptops and DVD facilities for group work and presentations, secure an individual study room with adjustable lighting or make use of our assistive technology.
