The construction industry is one of the most dynamic, diverse and significant in the world. We live, work and play in the built environment, and our Construction Management course will develop your skills, knowledge and understanding of both the technology and management involved in its creation across the key stages and process of planning, construction and maintenance. These range from building design and technology, to the management of resources (people, materials and equipment), to the assurance of the health, safety and wellbeing of the workforce, to the administration of projects and stakeholder engagement, all as they are carried out within contemporary regulatory, legal, economic, and social contexts, and with reference to the latest thinking in sustainability and developments in digital technologies and Building Information Modelling (BIM).
You’ll use our specialist facilities including industry-standard surveying equipment and a dedicated computer suite offering the latest in CAD, 3D Modelling, project management and financial software. During the course, you will also develop your communication, numerical, IT, teamwork, analytical and problem solving skills within a Built Environment context.
Practical experience comes in the form of Constructionarium, a key part of your Level 4 study, where you will get to take part in the real-life construction of an iconic building or structure over a residential week, learning both management and hands-on construction trade skills along the way. The development of professional skills is embedded throughout the course, linked to authentic, realistic and practical assessment within many modules. Students are also encouraged to attend at the various professional body CPD events regularly held here at ARU, to start to build your industry networks and meet other young professionals from the region.
Our course leader, Dr Fred Sherratt MCIOB C.BuildE CABE, has over ten years’ experience of working within the construction industry for a large main contractor, before becoming an award-winning academic specialising in construction health and safety research. As well as writing textbooks, articles and research papers, Fred maintains a strong industry network, and the course offers opportunities to visit a variety of construction sites and listen to guest lectures from industry experts. Students have previously visited sites in London and Cambridge, hosted by companies such as Bouygues and Galliford Try, and listened to experts from the CIOB, the Considerate Constructors Scheme and Trowers and Hamlins LLP. Fred’s professional and academic links ensure you will be getting the most up to date industry information, exploring the most relevant contemporary issues for practice, and drawing on the latest research and innovations from academia within your course curriculum, making this a dynamic and highly relevant course for those wanting to build a career within the construction industry.
We look forward to welcoming you onto our Construction Management course here at ARU and supporting you in your first steps to becoming a chartered construction professional of the future.
Our course is fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE).
