Overview
Cyber attacks make headlines across the globe. Demand for talented computing graduates is outstripping supply, so fine-tune your network and data skills with us, take an optional placement year, and be ready to make your mark in the global cyber security industry. Our new Cambridge-based course is being prepared for National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) certification, while our close links to cyber security institutions such as OWASP and Cyber Crime Prevent bring industry experts into the classroom.
Cyber security is a major priority for governments and organisations throughout the world. Never before has the world been so vulnerable to attack. With government and organisations increasing their cyber protection budgets, it’s never been a better time to invest in the industry. We’ll work together to explore how organisations and individuals can take action to protect themselves online from cyber-attacks.
In this multi-disciplinary programme, we’ll begin by understanding the fundamentals of cyber crime together with networks and operating systems. You will understand and recognise the threats to an organisation and its infrastructures. Introductions to software principles and secure software development are explored.
The strategic deployment and implementation of cyber security within an organisational context is studied in secure systems architectures, whilst aspects such as network security and data security are examined. Embedded within the degree is CCNA Routing and Switching and CCNA Security syllabus; adding significant value with industry leading skills and recognition. You can progress your learning with us to full certification of both CCNA Routing and Switching and CCNA Security. You will just need to pay for your exam fees.
You will also develop transferrable skills in project management and quality assurance which are critical for cyber security professionals. You’ll focus on aspects of risk management, security governance and legal aspects of cyber security as well as related concepts of ethical computing.
We encourage you to enrol on our sandwich degree that includes a one-year work placement in the computing industry. This greatly enhances our student’s employability as you’ll gain skills in communicating information to higher level enterprise managers, giving you the confidence to present your problem solving solutions and strategic security planning within any organisation.
You’ll apply your knowledge and skills in a real-life context, in our specialist labs which are equipped with tools such as Kali Linux, Wireshark, Nmap and Burp Suite. You will apply fundamental skills in penetration testing, automate attacks and exploits and bypass antivirus software.
Careers
We work with employers to make sure you graduate with the knowledge, skills and abilities they need. They help us review what we teach and how we teach it – and they offer hands-on, practical opportunities to learn through work-based projects, internships or placements.
The 2015 Global Information Security Workforce Study predicts that the global cyber security workforce shortage will reach 1.5 million by 2020, as demand outstrips supply. As a result, graduates are in demand with cyber security roles starting on salaries from £25-30,000. Cyber security consultants can expect to earn anything between £40,000 and 380,000 per year and many provide their services under their own Limited companies.
Your skills in computer, network and information security could see you working closely with lawyers, government, commercial organisations, the education sector and investigation agencies, as well as the finance and e-commerce sectors and national security organisations.
Graduation doesn’t need to be the end of your time with us. If you’d like to continue your studies we offer a wide range of full-time and part-time postgraduate courses including MSc Cloud Computing and MSc Cyber Security. You’re also in the perfect position to continue your academic career and move on to research degree in Computer Science (PhD).
