Do you love literature? Do you want to write for a living, or inspire others by teaching? Solent University’s BA (Hons) English programme can help to focus your talents and turn them into marketable skills.
Solent University’s English and Creative Writing subject area was ranked 16th in the Guardian University League Tables 2019.
The lecturers on the BA (Hons) English programme are passionate about what they teach – all have published their own academic work, plays, novels and scripts. The student-led Solent Quill Society is the first philosophical and literary society of its kind at Solent. Guest speakers are a regular evening feature of the society and students are encouraged to come along and get involved. Theatre directors, poets and other English-industry related speakers have worked closely with Quill Society members to share insider knowledge about how to get ahead.
Throughout the course, students are encouraged to pitch for work at the University’s creative agencies. These agencies give students from all of Solent’s creative courses the chance to work with real business clients and create a CV-boosting portfolio of commercial work.
The course also features units that cover employability skills. These include writing with power: professional practice in English, toolbox, Solent Press (our in-house publisher) and work experience. Students benefit from a choice of optional units, allowing for specialisation into specific areas of literature.
