Overview
In the age of modern technology and 24-hour news accessible through a single click of the mouse, we often find ourselves looking helplessly at the screens as emergencies unfold in front of our eyes.
The actions taken in the initial minutes of an emergency are key. Whether they’re earthquakes, transport incidents or floods, if you want to play an active part preparing for those risks and get involved in emergency response, our MSc Emergency Management and Resilience could be for you.
This degree covers a range of specialist topics within the interdisciplinary field of emergency preparedness, response, recovery and resilience. It is practitioner-facing and combines case studies with theory and concepts, to ensure your preparedness for real life emergencies.
Course information
Historically a classroom-based delivery, the on-campus version of this course has been running since 2007. It enjoys an excellent reputation, with many students enrolling on the basis of professional recommendations.
This course now offers students the option to study online. It is designed to give you the knowledge, skills and competencies necessary to fulfil duties that fall upon organisations in the UK and internationally, and aims to prepare you for known and emergent risks. It aims to equip you with skills to deliver more effective responses to realised risks and threats, and plan and implement successful recovery strategies.
Why choose this course?
The risk, preparedness, response and recovery process is covered in the context of wide-area emergencies which affect the public and require a multi-agency response. The course is designed to provide an understanding of the issues that underlie many problems faced by emergency and crisis management practitioners and how these issues may be addressed in practice. All of this with a view to enhancing organisational resilience and integrated emergency management.
Career prospects
We strive to develop our students into professionals who can make difficult decisions whilst being culturally sensitive, ethical and compassionate. The course focuses on enhancing the capabilities required by international relief and development organisations, private sector consultancies, national government and local authorities.
