Course information
Balancing academic theory with practical considerations, this course aims to help develop your knowledge and capabilities in the core key areas of entrepreneurship and innovation, finance, risk analysis, project management, leadership, and consultancy.
We aim to introduce you to the key aspects and challenges of managing a company across a wide range of sectors, to enable you to develop an integrated understanding of strategic and operational management. For example, using strategic decision making, risk analysis and environmental impact tools, we will consider the importance of business decisions and the leadership skills that influence business success.
To help deliver this, a very important distinguishing feature of this course is that it has been designed to incorporate three alternative pathways that allow you to select a route that is clearly focused on your anticipated or current career path in a manufacturing company. The selection of one of the three pathways (Engineering Business Management, Technical, or Operations) aims to add specific career-focused content to the core modules that all students take.
You have the opportunity to gain a range of management, intellectual and personal skills – including communication, cultural awareness, team working, objective setting, leadership, consultancy, presentation skills and digital literacy – required for operational effectiveness and success. We will also introduce you to a range of analytical tools and techniques, such as data gathering and analysis, problem solving, critical evaluation and structured report writing, so that you will be well-placed to research, analyse and solve complex problems.
Why choose this course?
With an emphasis on planning, directing and coordinating international operations in the engineering sector, this multidisciplinary course seeks to prepare you to successfully manage an engineering company at a senior level. This master’s course has been developed in consultation with our impressive network of industry partners, including Jaguar Land Rover, Aston Martin, UNIPART, SAIC, Prodrive, Airbus, Tata, GKN, Ricardo and MIRA.
The design of the course is such that you can tailor your studies depending on your interests or career aspirations, by selecting one of three alternative pathways. This selection adds specific career-focused content to your course. We aim to assist you in choosing the best pathways to suit your goals.
Regarding workplace relevance, the course includes:
- Use of simulations and realistic work environments
- Use of ‘live’ projects sourced from external organisations
- Incorporation of field visits, case studies, experience of alumni
- Deliberate use of staff with relevant, first-hand experience;
- Opportunities for students to assess ethical issues arising from current practice, and to form an ethically-based approach to their own practice.
Many of the topics adopt the Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing’s Activity-Led-Learning approach, in which you investigate problems from industry and draw down the knowledge to solve them through research and analysis. This should also help you to develop transferrable skills, including team work, which are essential in engineering management and for future leadership roles.
