Overview
Get the skills you need to register as a fully qualified dispensing optician who can dispense, fit and supply spectacles. With access to our campus eye clinic and teaching from award-winning staff, there’s no better place for you to train.
Dispensing opticians help patients to find the best eyecare solution for them. You’ll learn to work alongside optometrists, combining your clinical expertise with the skills needed to manage a successful practice.
Our extended course is ideal if you don’t have all the qualifications required for our BSc (Hons) course. The entry requirements are more flexible, giving you the chance to improve your knowledge in science and maths during Year 1. As you progress your learning will become more practically based and you’ll gain hands-on experience. We’ll encourage you to find work experience in your third year which can then be carried over into your final year where your work experience, if appropriately supervised, can be used as part of your pre-qualification portfolio for the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO). On successful completion of your studies, you will gain exemption from the ABDO theoretical examinations.
Small teaching groups mean you’ll get plenty of one-to-one time with tutors. A lot of your learning will be hands-on, using industry-standard equipment in our dispensing laboratory and our campus eye clinic.
Careers
We work with employers to make sure you graduate with the knowledge, skills and abilities they need. They help us review what we teach and how we teach it – and they offer hands-on, practical opportunities to learn through work-based projects, internships or placements.
When you graduate you can apply for jobs as a pre-registration dispensing optician. The preregistration period prepares you for your ABDO final practical examinations to enter onto the General Optical Council Register.
Once registered you can apply for jobs as a dispensing optician or a managing dispensing optician, and you can also specialise in the fields of contact lenses or low vision. By choosing to do further studies you may also train as an orthoptist or an optometrist.
