Solent’s PGCert Sport Development and Management is designed specifically for those already working within the industry and supports continuing professional development for those who wish to gain a postgraduate qualification.
The core units enable students to critically apply theories, concepts and frameworks in sport development and sport policy, as well as analyse key approaches to monitoring and evaluation for sport to further develop knowledge of theory and practice of sport development, sport policy, research methods, and monitoring and evaluation for sport.
Students engage in debates and critical evaluation of the local, national and international context of sport and health, including critically discussing the role of sport to address broader social change outcomes, and the role of physical activity in public health agendas.
Students are also able to tailor the course towards their own specific career ambitions with optional units allowing them to focus on key specialisms such as sport marketing, media and youth sport.
Research informed teaching is key at Solent and offers an exciting element to this PGCert programme. Staff delivering the programme are research active in relevant areas, demonstrating opportunities to use research in innovative ways to aid student learning. The research-orientated curriculum focuses on knowledge construction, and uses engaging methods of teaching such as learning through scenarios and case studies.

Solent’s sport development and management PGCert programme will help to increase students’ knowledge to prepare for roles in areas such as sport governance, sport development, business development in sport, physical activity, public health, international sport development, sport for social change, sport management and education.
INDUSTRY LINKS
Staff within Solent’s sport education and development programme area have existing links with local partners, including the Saints Foundation, Isle of Wight Public Health and EduMove. Staff also have relevant sector experience enabling them to discuss how theory can be applied in practice and understand the challenges of working within the sector. These current partnerships support you to practically apply theories, models and concepts developing the core skills needed for meaningful community engagement and professional practice in the relevant sectors.
PLACEMENTS
Students will be encouraged and supported to gain work experience and placements although this is not a requirement of the course. The course team have a number of partnerships and arrangement with local schools and the Saints Foundation. Where students are currently in relevant professions, they can use this experience to enhance learning and develop their understanding of the link between theory and practice in the work place.
