If you see yourself as a creative production specialist working in a multi-camera TV studio, Solent’s ScreenSkills accredited television studio production degree will help you to develop programme ideas, including for interactive and multi-platform applications. You’ll also gain essential skills in directing, producing, research, camera operation, sound mixing, lighting and design, studio techniques and digital post-production, leaving you well prepared for a career as a media professional.

Solent has one of the largest HD studios in the south of England, which is capable of running ten cameras and seats an audience of 200. Recently, TV production students used this studio to direct and shoot a pilot for the QI production team.
The University’s multi-million-pound media academy boasts a wide range of radio and music production facilities and specialist edit suites containing Mac Pro computers installed with the full Adobe Creative suite for editing, colour grading and special effects work. Students also have full access to a comprehensive selection of professional studio equipment including 4K and HD video cameras, DSLRs, a wide range of lenses, lighting rigs, dolly equipment and sound equipment for on-location shoots.
In previous years, students have been expected to complete at least 120 hours of work experience during the course, with opportunities to carry this out embedded in the curriculum. Students are encouraged to get involved with the University’s in-house company Solent Productions, who have previously offered placements and opportunities on a huge range of practical projects including music festivals, corporate and promotional work. To gain further practical experience students are encouraged to freelance at Solent Creatives, the University’s in-house creative agency, offering them unique opportunities to work on live client briefs to help develop their showreel.
Graduates have worked on a huge range of broadcast programming including Have I Got News for You, Strictly Come Dancing, Don’t Tell the Bride, Big Brother and The X Factor.
What does this course lead to?
Graduates have gone on to roles including junior multi-skilled studio operator, freelance production co-ordinator, trainee technical operator and presentation scheduler, for companies including Greenfield Television Corporation and Discovery International. Past students have had the opportunity to work on live client briefs and develop a professional showreel, working with the University’s creative agency, Solent Creatives. Students who have previously studied television production degrees at Solent have recently won awards from the BBC and Royal Television Society.
