Overview
Mechanical engineering touches virtually every aspect of modern life. It’s at the forefront of developing new technologies for a multitude of industries including transport, healthcare, construction, and robotics.
This course focuses on a range of topics including computer-aided design (CAD), thermodynamics and heat transfer, solid mechanics, dynamics and control, materials engineering and processing, and product development.
Our teaching and content are influenced by our research in aerodynamics, fluid systems, transportation, manufacturing and sustainable development.
You can study Mechanical Engineering either as a three-year BEng (Hons) programme, or as a four-year integrated master’s. At the end of year three, you have the option of graduating with a BEng or continuing your studies for a further year for a MEng, subject to meeting the progression requirements.
Key features
- Benefit from dual accreditation from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). This will help you start your journey towards becoming a Chartered Engineer.
- Study a range of topics including computer-aided design, thermodynamics and heat transfer, solid mechanics, dynamics and control, materials engineering and processing and fracture mechanics.
- Benefit from specialist facilities such as our control and dynamics laboratories, mechanics and materials laboratories, engine test cell and Rohde and Schwarz embedded systems laboratories.
- Join DMU Racing and take part in Formula Student, an annual initiative set up by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers which challenges universities across the world to design, build and race a single-seat racing car.
- Graduates have opportunities to progress into careers across a range of fields, including aerospace, automotive, defence and energy, as well as work in the product manufacturing and food and beverage industries.

Facilities and features
Mechanical Engineering Laboratory
The main mechanical engineering laboratory is a large open-plan space designed to accommodate the study of thermo-fluids, solid mechanics and dynamics. It also has an area with machine tools for manufacture of student designs.
Engine Test Cell
There is a purpose built engine testing facility to measure engine performance and emissions. Typical student projects done in this facility include running the engine with alternative fuels such as bio-fuels and water-in-diesel emulsified fuels to improve performance and emission characteristics.
Energy Laboratory
The energy laboratory is available to conduct thermo-fluid experiments relevant to mechanical engineering. The laboratory contains equipment to teach wide range of thermos-fluid applications such as Air-Conditioning, Heat-pumps and various fundamental experiments such as measurement of thermal conductivity.
Materials Science Laboratory
The materials laboratory houses a wide range of facilities for material microstructure examination and properties testing. Equipment incudes microscopes and various properties testers for tensile testing, fatigue testing, wear testing, corrosion testing, hardness testing and impact testing.
Dynamics and Control Laboratory
This is a dedicated laboratory for the study of dynamics and control, equipment in this laboratory allows you to study gyroscope theory, vibration theory, no-linear control, inertia bending etc.
Design Studios
There are many computer laboratories available with CAD and Finite Element Modelling Software. The primary packages used are CREO and AUTODESK Simulation for FEA modelling. Student will be using these design software from their first year of study.
Library
The main Kimberlin Library is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (other than in exceptional circumstances) and offers a huge range of online resources, all of which can be remotely accessed from anywhere you choose.
The library is run by dedicated staff who offer additional support to students, including help with academic writing, research strategies, literature searching and reference management and assistive technology, and mathematical skills for non-maths students. There is also a Just Ask service for help and advice, available via email or telephone.
Learning zones
Our comfortable and well-equipped study areas provide a range of environments to suit your needs.
Our Learning Zones and The Greenhouse provide flexible spaces, whether you are working as a group, practising a presentation or working quietly on your own.
They feature workstations with power supplies for laptops, plus bookable syndicate rooms with plasma screens, laptops and DVD facilities. Wi-Fi is available across all campus locations.
Opportunities and careers
Graduate Careers
The range of specialist modules studied on this course is reflected by the diversity of careers on offer. Careers exist in industries including aerospace, automotive, defence and energy; as well as the manufacturing of industrial and domestic products, and food industry. You will have the ability to work in broader areas of design, research and development, marketing, sales, production management and quality control.
#DMUglobal
This is our innovative international experience programme which aims to enrich your studies and expand your cultural horizons – helping you to become a global graduate, equipped to meet the needs of employers across the world.
Through #DMUglobal, we offer a wide range of opportunities including on-campus and UK activities, overseas study, internships, faculty-led field trips and volunteering, as well as Erasmus+ and international exchanges.
Our #DMUglobal High Flyers Award offers students a discount of up to £1,000 towards a #DMUglobal opportunity (terms and conditions apply).
Placements
Work placements are offered as part of this course and they are one of the best ways to boost your skills and experience while studying, as well as improving your chances of gaining a graduate level job and can often lead to an offer of employment for when you graduate.
We have numerous links with organisations both in the UK and internationally, and the placements team will help you find a placement to suit your and you interests and aspirations.
Mechanical Engineering student Tom Hobson secured a year-long work placement with industry giant Airbus. Tom was also successful in landing a placement with Jaguar Landrover, which he chose to turn down in favour of a position with the aerospace manufacturer.
