Overview
This course provides an opportunity to engage in current debates on education by focusing on the contemporary approaches, skills and methods used in teaching, learning and educational wellbeing, and looking at how childhood is shaped by culture and society.
Our students explore how people develop through education and, by taking part in placement and volunteering opportunities from the first year of study and throughout their degree programme, gain a broad range of skills that are transferable to careers in socially orientated professions.
Recent graduates have gone on to work in teaching, education practice, early years childcare, youth work, educational publishing, the creative industries or choose to progress to postgraduate level courses, such as our Education Practice MA.
You’ll cover topics including perspectives on education, thinking and learning in higher education, historical and contemporary issues and childhood, social justice and education, as well as developing your professional agency through placement in year one.
You’ll also have the opportunity to choose from elective modules in years two and three that include forest school and outdoor learning, preparing for professional practice music in school life, inclusion, education and equality, special educational needs and creativity and education.

All students are encouraged to undertake some voluntary placement experience towards the end of year one and continue to do so throughout years two and three. It is usually possible to begin earlier in students first year. Placements are assessed through a project/placement module in year three.
Such opportunities will be arranged via De Montfort University’s award-winning Square Mile Programme, subject to background checks (DBS). However, students may decide to undertake numerous consecutive placements in different settings of their choice.
Graduate Careers
The Education Studies BA (Hons) develops skills that are particularly useful for students who intend to build a career working with young children. While this is likely to mean employment in primary schools, it can also include nursery and other pre and after-school settings.
Many of our recent graduates have started their careers in; teaching (PGCE), education practice, nurseries, youth work and educational publishing for example. We also offer a range of postgraduate opportunities, including an Education Studies MA.
You can choose to study for a PGCE at school or college level. While the majority of our students choose to follow a career in teaching, the MA opens up opportunities to work in a number of wider educational environments, including youth and community work, local authority employment, social and educational research and early years settings.
