Overview
This course is designed to help you examine sport’s governing bodies and the foundations of sports and ethics. You will explore topics including doping, anti-discrimination laws and human rights acts affecting sports. In addition to studying core modules, you will be able to choose from a wide variety of optional, insightful modules, enabling you to tailor your studies and specialise in your chosen area of interest.
This course is suitable for both lawyers and non-legal professionals with an interest in the field of sports law. After completing this course graduates will be able to develop into roles such as sports regulation and governance, commercial sports, sports broadcasting and sports management.

Structure and assessment
Course modules
The Sports Regulatory Regime and Sports Rights – this module looks at sport’s governing bodies and the foundations of sports and ethics, in particular taking an in depth look at doping control in sports. You will also examine the anti-discrimination laws and human rights acts that affect sports.
You will also select elective modules which might include:
- Commercial Aspects of Sport
- Event Management
- Negotiated Study
- Representing the Athlete/Player
- Sport, Broadcasting and New Media
- Sports Governance
- The Sports Participant and the Courts
- Sports and Ethics (Advanced)
Dissertation
You must also undertake a dissertation, providing an invaluable opportunity to study a particular aspect of the law in-depth. You will need to apply and enhance your technical knowledge and critical awareness in a subject of your choice. In order to obtain the LLM in Sports Law and Practice it is necessary to write a dissertation with a sports law theme.

Facilities and features
Hugh Aston Building
You will be taught in the Hugh Aston Building, which was purpose-built at a cost of £35 million.
Facilities also include lecture theatres and classrooms with capacities ranging from 50 to 250 people, break-out spaces for group work, quiet study zones for individual work and a large number of high-spec IT labs, some of which are installed with professional software.
Library services
The main Kimberlin Library is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (other than in exceptional circumstances) and offers a huge range of online resources, all of which can be remotely accessed from anywhere you choose.
The library is run by dedicated staff who offer additional support to students, including help with academic writing, research strategies, literature searching and reference management and assistive technology, and mathematical skills for non-maths students. There is also a Just Ask service for help and advice, available via email or telephone.
Learning zones
Our Learning Zones and the The Greenhouse also provide space for group or individual work and study.
There are 1,600 study places across all library locations, more than 700 computer stations, laptops to borrow, free wi-fi and desktop power outlets.
You can also book rooms with plasma screens, laptops and DVD facilities for group work and presentations, secure an individual study room with adjustable lighting or make use of our assistive technology.
