Course information
The primary purpose of this course is to try and equip you with the practical experience, skills and knowledge to apply advanced economics principles and mathematics to support decision making – at a global, national or individual firm level.
Upon successful completion, this ability to practice effective decision making should support you as you progress into your chosen future career, either as an economist or in related roles and sectors.
We adopt a holistic approach, exploring the synergies between economic theory, management practice, international business and finance.
Throughout your studies, you will have the opportunity to encounter real-life scenarios. You will also have the opportunity to learn how to use managerial economics tools to solve actual economic problems – from determining optimal pricing strategies to evaluating mergers and take-overs, among others.
Course content is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect new developments in economics, the world economy and the needs of private and public sectors. For example, we have recently examined the topic of why corporate CEO pay is so high.
Through our current links with external organisations, including regulatory bodies and public sector institutions, as well as major firms, we aim to provide relevant guest lectures for our students, with previous attendees coming from firms such as PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and the Government Economic Service (subject to availability).
This course can be offered on a part-time basis, with study over two years. Whilst we would like to give you all the information about our part-time offering here, it is tailored for each course each year depending on the number of part-time applicants. Therefore, the part-time teaching arrangements vary. You can make an enquiry about part-time study using our online forms, for UK and for EU/International students.
Why choose this course?
Aimed at those seeking managerial careers in finance, management or international business, the MSc International Business Economics course will suit students from either an economics or more general background who wish to have the opportunity to develop their knowledge of business economics, international economics and finance. We will give you an insight into the way institutions and business practices operate in an international context.
A distinct advantage of this course comes from the current links of members of our staff with the Economics Network of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), with the knowledge shared through these links informing curriculum design and delivery. Several current staff have previously received research grants to analyse the impact of various teaching and learning activities on the study of microeconomics and economics threshold concepts, and have previously presented their findings nationally. Please note that staff are subject to change.
We aim to provide a solid grounding in the economic theory that explains business behaviour and operations both at the level of the firm and within the global macroeconomy. With the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of market-leading economics and business software packages, from for example Stata to Bloomberg, you should also learn to critically apply economic tools to various management problems associated with international business decision making.
Your teaching is designed to be research-informed by staff who are currently engaged in research in the areas of applied economics and finance areas, such as international business, monetary union, development economics, financial economics, financial regulation, financial derivatives and emerging markets. Teaching on the course is informed by the work of the Centre for Financial and Corporate Integrity, situated in Coventry Business School, to ensure that course content is relevant and reflects the latest research findings. Please note that staff are subject to change.
