Overview
Architecture remains one of the most enjoyable and rewarding professions; in designing new spaces and buildings around our everyday lives and needs, you will be challenged intellectually, artistically and creatively.
You can make a major positive contribution to society by shaping our environment and surroundings, leaving a lasting impact and legacy.
Professionally accredited by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), this course adopts a hands-on approach to learning with a focus on imagination, communication and context. We run skills sessions to support drawing and model making as an integral part of studio work. You will also have access to excellent workshops in the Graham Sutherland Building, run by specialists in the areas of woodworking, clay modelling and digital craft processes.
Coventry is ranked as the 9th best university in the country for ‘Architecture’ in the Guardian University Guide 2019, and our graduates are highly regarded in the profession. They can be found working in leading architectural practices, including Aedas RHWL, Faulkner Browns Architects, C.F. Møller Architects and Schmidt Hammer Lassen.
Course information
This course seeks to equip you with the knowledge and expertise to create architectural designs that balance human needs with the integrity of the environment, satisfying aesthetic and technical demands.
You should gain a comprehensive grounding in design, theory, history and building technology, while embracing conservation, sustainability and environmental issues.
Why choose this course?
This innovative course has been designed to respond to the challenges of the environmental, economic and social climate of the early 21st century. Coventry is a vibrant, connected city, internationally known for its Centre of Trust, Peace and Social Relations. Increasingly, we connect with this research expertise to encourage human-centred solutions which explore the complexity of contexts in which architecture is made. You will have the opportunity to engage in the full depth and breadth of contemporary architectural education.
We have strong links with a growing network of West Midlands practices including IDP Group and Design Buro, many of whom provide input to course management and development as members of our Architecture Advisory Board. We work with the RIBA West Midlands through the student mentoring scheme which provides placements for students, and are part of the new initiative ‘Learn It, Earn it’ which connects students directly with practitioners through a series of talks each year.
These industry connections also provide opportunities for professional placements and collaborative projects. Previously, students have worked with organisations including Theatre Absolute, The Centre for Peace and Reconciliation and Coventry Canal Trust.
Based in the School of Art and Design, the course instinctively draws expertise from the wide range of creative disciplines on offer. We believe in collaboration – merging studies in art, history and theory, studio and tectonics – providing opportunities to connect with architects, engineers and built environment professionals.
You will be taught by staff with significant professional experience, having worked in Austria, Argentina, Ghana, Uganda, Nepal and the UK. They have worked in conservation, healthcare, education and housing on commercial, residential, community-led participatory projects, and some are competition winning architects.
Teaching is strongly committed to context and materiality, inspired by the rich context of the city of Coventry, reflecting the historical and contemporary background of the city as an industrial hub and international centre for peace and reconciliation.
Centred around studio practice, your learning will encompass design, technology, cultural contexts and communication, together with professional practice. We will aim to develop your understanding of the relationship between global issues, local context and the reality of architecture.
International experience opportunities
Coventry School of Art and Design has a multinational population and you will be working alongside students from all over the globe. The gathering of nationalities gives each course cohort a unique identity through the exchange of knowledge of place, which students bring from home. We actively encourage you to make connections and comparisons from your own experiences and explore synergies and contrasts together.
Architecture is, by the nature of the discipline, international, accessible through references and precedents. International study visits for each year are embedded in learning and form the basis of comparison with Coventry through study of culture, urban pattern, networks and scale. Past destinations have included Barcelona, Valencia, Rome, Paris and Berlin. We have had the opportunity to visit neighbourhoods with local architects who have detailed insights into the cultural and historical stories of place, to large scale public buildings such as the Opera House in Valencia.
You will have an opportunity to spend a year studying or working abroad. We have direct links with countries in Europe and beyond, including practices and universities in Canada, USA, Germany, Netherlands and Spain. Previous students have gone to work with practices including Schmidt Hammer Lassen in Copenhagen and Singapore. We are currently exploring opportunities for digital overseas learning in Iraq and Malasyia.
Career prospects
When you graduate from this course you should be well suited to working in a range of architectural practices and other design industries, such as interior or graphic design.
Careers could include working as an architect, architectural technologist or interior and spatial designer. A degree in Architecture can prove useful in related roles, such as a building surveyor, town planner, commercial/residential surveyor, teacher or lecturer, buildings inspector, conservation officer, landscape architect, planning and development surveyor or structural engineer. You may choose to further your professional or academic education.
Professional enhancement is central to our ethos and you will be encouraged to embrace either an industry placement or international study exchange before your final year. Graduates of this course should be used to working proactively to generate ideas as an individual or in teams and meeting deadlines.
The outcome of your final year will be presented in our prestigious Degree Show with a further chance for you to present your work at an external venue, for example at New Designers in London.
