Overview
Did you know that the Airbus A380, Boeing Dreamliner and Eurofighter Typhoon each had key mechanical and electrical systems designed and developed here in this country? The UK is also one of few countries in the world with the resources to design and manufacture advanced helicopters.
Accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and based within the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Automotive, this course is designed to provide you the opportunity to learn the vital skills required to join the teams of aerospace systems engineers designing and developing systems for the next generation of aircraft.
We want you to develop in-depth detailed design skills with hands-on access to our remarkable equipment, which includes a Harrier Jump Jet, flight simulation suite and the Mercedes Petronas Wind Tunnel and industry standard software. This equipment may be just one of the reasons we have such high levels of student satisfaction – 96% overall in the latest National Student Survey (NSS) 2016.
Throughout the course you will have the chance to explore the theory of aircraft system design, the complexities of aerospace programme management and the application of industry standard virtual and practical techniques to design safe and reliable aerospace components.
Our mechanical engineering courses are ranked 7th in the UK by the Guardian University Guide 2019.
Course information
Designed to support the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC), the course is centred upon systems for aerospace vehicles and the requirement to design total system solutions including practical and virtual design skills.
96% of our students are satisfied with the quality of the course.
Why choose this course?
Coventry University’s aerospace degree courses offer innovative curriculum and learning opportunities, strong industry links and excellent technical facilities.
The aerospace industry provides one of the most challenging environments for the development and testing of new technologies. Offering a range of exciting careers, there is a growing demand for aerospace engineers with a systems focus and who are able to embrace the multidisciplinary aspects of problem solving to help design the next generation of aircraft systems.
We aim to develop a thorough, integrated understanding of mechanical, electrical and systems engineering and how this knowledge is applied in the aerospace industry. This course, which has been well established for over 20 years, is taught with a focus on developing problem solving skills particularly in the area of design and optimisation. You will have the opportunity to learn to apply your knowledge using industry standard tools and practices.
You can also gain experience of the industry first-hand through our exciting industry-focused fieldtrips, which have previously included the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre in the US and Airbus (Toulouse), Airbus (Marseille) and Finmeccanica in Europe (application and additional costs may apply).
The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Automotive Engineering enjoys an excellent reputation for teaching, outstanding student experience and exciting research. We work closely with the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and our strong industry links, with companies such as Emirates, Jaguar Land Rover, GE Aviation, Meggitt, UTC Aerospace Systems, Airbus, Rolls Royce, Unipart and Birmingham International Airport, can lead to placement opportunities and collaborative projects.
You will be taught by staff with industrial experience, having worked for Bombardier, Rolls Royce, BAE Systems, Marston Aerospace and the Ministry of Defence. Their research expertise ranges from aerodynamics, flight dynamics, aircraft structural analysis, crashworthiness modelling and avionics to human factors in aviation; it is utilised both within the research informed teaching on the course and in the final year project.
The combined theoretical and practical focus of the programme concentrates on engineering mathematics, mechanical, electrical and thermodynamic design, system simulation and modelling, control systems, aerodynamics, aircraft structures and manufacturing; all of which give our graduates a strong base from which to start professional work in aerospace design using the latest software tools. Previous students have obtained jobs as design engineers working on the latest projects in the aerospace industry.
International experience opportunities
The University is committed to providing a global educational experience and we encourage you to undertake a placement year or study year abroad after your second year of study. We will endeavour to support you in finding a placement anywhere in the world and in seeking financing for that experience.
Placements are currently primarily available in Europe, America or Asia. Previous students have been placed in GKN Aerospace (Munich, Germany), Bertrandt (Hamburg, Germany), Airbus (Toulouse, France) and studied Aerospace Engineering (UPM, Spain).
We have traditionally organised a range of foreign fieldtrips and, as part of a new partnership deal with Emirates Aviation University, our students recently had the chance to visit the Emirates Maintenance Centre and explore Dubai, which provided a unique opportunity to experience Middle Eastern culture, the modern architecture of Dubai, the climate, amazing food and interact with other multi-ethnic university students studying in Dubai.
Career prospects
After the United States, the UK has the second largest aerospace industry in the world, employing around 230,000 people in over 3,000 companies, including BAE Systems, GKN and Rolls-Royce, and a range of international companies with operations in the UK, such as Airbus, Cobham, AgustaWestland, Finmeccanica, Thales, Boeing and Bombardier.
This course aims to produce graduates with the skills to become successful detail-design engineers and engineering managers, both in aerospace and the wider engineering context, in fields such as aircraft and components design and manufacture, maintenance and testing, propulsion systems, flight simulation, aviation, avionics, patent engineering, financial services and many more.
When you are ready to find permanent employment, you can also receive support from our award-winning Faculty careers service, EEC Futures, which won the ‘Best Placement Service in the UK’ award at the National Undergraduate Employability Awards in 2015 and 2016.
Coventry University is committed to preparing you for your future career and giving you a competitive edge in the graduate job market. The University’s Careers and Employability team provide a wide range of support services to help you plan and prepare for your career.
