The industry-facing computer-generated content of this Computer Animation degree is underpinned by solid artistic and creative practices, enabling you to produce the best results possible. Based at the Cardiff campus, you’ll complete your work using industry- standard software across a range of projects, many of them designed to help you identify what you are good at, and to specialise in it. During major projects, you’ll work with others in a collaborative manner in a work-simulation environment that mirrors industry studio practice. You’ll study the history of animation, as well as marketing, business skills and entrepreneurship, all of which can enhance your employability when you graduate.
USW’s Computer Animation degree is part of Film & TV School Wales, which provides students with the up-to-date skills, opportunities and specialist training required by the film, TV, commercials, VFX and games industries.
Graduates from the Computer Animation course have been employed at prestigious studios throughout the world including Sony Pictures Imageworks and Dreamworks Animation, worked on exciting productions like Star Wars (Solo & The Last Jedi), Ready Player One, Avengers (Infinity War and Age of Ultron), The Jungle Book, Fantastic Beasts and the Harry Potter films, Guardians of the Galaxy and can be found at cutting-edge Computer Games Studios such as Rockstar North, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (Playstation) and EA Games (UK and USA).
You’ll begin with an introduction to 3D computer animation and 3D digital art principles, then progress to advanced 3D CG animation and 3D digital art for Games, VFX, Short Films and Commercials. During years two and three you’ll have the opportunity to specialise in areas such as character/creature animation, animated short film-making, 3D CG Art, CG for Games/VFX and much more. Suvi Jokiniemi, from Finland, graduated with first-class honours in 2016. Straight after graduation she began working as a Character Animator at Jellyfish Pictures, a BAFTA winning visual effects studio in London. From there she quickly moved to Double Negative, one of the UK’s largest VFX studios, where she worked on the Star Trek Beyond & Assassin’s Creed films. More recently she’s moved again to George Lucas’ prestigious ILM in London where she’s animated characters and creatures for Star Wars : The Last Jedi, Ready Player One & Solo: A Star Wars Story.
