An innovative course that produces world-class practitioners to work in the creative industries (theatre and media) in Wales and beyond.
The course meets the demand from theatre and media organisations in Wales for skilled bilingual creative workers. It will prepare students to work across a variety of media and closely with industry. The course will enable you to take the first steps into the creative industries in Wales and cover all career options including:

- Theatre and television directors
- Stage managers
- Playwrights / screenwriters
- Researchers

- TV presenters
- Teachers
You will study in the centre of Cardiff and at the heart of the creative industries in Wales. You will benefit from making professional contacts from the start and you will graduate with a deep understanding of the skills needed to work in the creative industries and of the cultural context of the theatre and media sectors in Wales and beyond.
You will develop and nurture creativity. You will learn practical skills in the fields of performance and media, study the cultural context of the creative industries and develop the skills that employers require and which will give you a competitive edge in the graduate workplace.
Our staff are experts in the fields of performance, media and culture and have a wide range of experience of working in the creative industries as performers, actors, directors, producers and playwrights, in Wales and internationally.
You do not necessarily need to have qualifications in drama or media studies to study this course. We welcome applicants with a GCSE qualification in Welsh as a first or second language.
The course is suitable for students interested in working in the creative industries as a performer or in another role.
The course is suitable for fluent Welsh speakers and those who have learned Welsh at school.
What you will study
The Perfformio, Theatr a’r Cyfryngau / Performance, Theatre and Media course will be the perfect choice for you if you want to explore the creative possibilities of these fields and want to secure a career in the creative industries in Wales or beyond, or a related career such as teaching.
You will learn to think creatively and to consider and evaluate the cultural value of the performing arts. The course will teach you practical skills that will enable you to be confident, creative, and employable with a deep understanding of the creative industries both in Wales and globally.
You will graduate with the transferable skills that employers are looking for such as the ability to think creatively, to solve problems, to communicate, to lead, to work with others, to be flexible and to manage your time. You will also have studied through the medium of Welsh.
Bridging education and work is part of the course ethos and you will be in regular contact with companies in the sector.
Teaching
The course includes practical workshops, discussion sessions and tutorials, as well as visits to performances, venues and festivals (confirmed annually), and through work experience. In a typical week, you will participate in practical workshops in a theatre / television studio or on location. You will prepare and attend discussion sessions. You will also discuss your work during one-to-one sessions with tutors on a regular basis.
You will also attend Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol collaborative events with students and staff from other Universities.
The direct contact hours will change from week to week and term to term – from 12 hours per week to 40 hours per week during intensive learning periods.
For every 20 credits a student is expected to study independently for 80 hours
The number of days studied will vary depending on the nature of the module / period of study and whether the learning is intensive or not.
Guest practitioners from the industry regularly contribute to the course.
We have an open-door policy in relation to students contacting a member of staff for assistance.
Students will collaborate with students from other courses and be part of a community of Welsh-speaking students and graduates.
Assessment
There are no exams for this course. Students are assessed mainly through practical coursework as well as more traditional coursework.
