Delve into the diverse world of Sports Marketing where you’ll explore the unique opportunities and challenges that face sports marketers and the industry as a whole.
You’ll explore consumer culture, how it affects the sports world and how to spot marketing opportunities within it. Studying with us will set you up perfectly for an exciting career in marketing, whatever path you choose to follow.
Why study this subject?
The London 2012 Olympics showed us how important marketing, management and the media is for major sports events and specifically the role of marketing sport for entertainment.
The massive growth in the sports sector means there’s increased demand for quality graduates who can demonstrate both knowledge and experience of working within the sports industry.
In today’s economy, marketing plays a vital role in all organisations. By studying with us, you’ll develop your skills and learn how marketing can enhance the performance and perceptions of any organisation.
Why study at Buckinghamshire New University?
We always strive to give you ‘real world’ experience which will best prepare you for stepping into your future career. In our BA (Hons) Sport Marketing course, you’ll have the opportunity to engage in real marketing and agency briefs meaning you’ll be learning in a uniquely practical way from day one.
We’ve designed the course in this way to help you develop personal enterprise and entrepreneurial capabilities whilst being innovative and creative in your work. This focus on real-world experience will give you the competitive edge when heading into employment.
We offer our students access to the incredible professional network we’ve spent many years cultivating. You’ll interact with lots of different people within the sports industry throughout your course, including athletes and professional governing bodies.
What’s more, with our campus being so close to London, we have some amazing opportunities for our students to complete placements and work experience with top sports and marketing organisations.
Our High Wycombe campus is also close to the CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) headquarters so they often visit our students and give really valuable careers advice – you can’t get much better than that.
One of the most important things about our Sports courses is that we are the only university in the UK to focus on disability sport, an area of increasing importance in the industry.
What facilities can I use?
Students of this course can utilise our state-of-the-art gym and human performance laboratory, home to an indoor three-lane running track that has 3D motion-capture technology.
The facility helps to enhance athletes’ performance through improved technique, and also assists with injury prevention and rehabilitation.
The lab is also equipped for assessing a range of physiological, biomechanical and psychological parameters meaning you’ll always have lots of choice when it comes to designing a research experiment.
What will I study?
With a strong business studies foundation, this course will take you through the targeting and positioning of brands, paying attention to issues like market competition and saturation.
You’ll explore sport commercialisation through broadcast, sponsorship and branding arrangements and cover the management of digital media, exploring the role it has to play in sports marketing. You’ll also look at how to measure marketing campaign effectiveness using market research techniques and digital analytics.
By becoming an expert in this area, you’ll be able to establish the best return on marketing and communications investment for your future employers and clients.
You’ll learn all about business management and spend time looking at the impact of emerging markets and the process companies use to explore the potential of moving into international markets.
We’ll also cover strategic sport management and finance plus the regulation of sport business – crucial parts of any marketer’s role, whatever the industry context.
Because your future employment is always at the top of our agenda, you’ll also learn some important transferable skills like communication, networking and how to carry out research.
How will I be taught and assessed?
You’ll work towards two qualifications at the same time on this course – we have CIM modules embedded within our degree modules so once you’ve graduated you can register with the CIM.
You’ll go to CIM events, work with industry leaders and, joining students from our other Business degrees, you’ll get vital experience while developing your business skills.
We believe that having professional and personal support makes a huge difference to the university experience of our students. We always make sure you have one-to-one teaching with our lecturers – at BNU we build relationships where lecturers know their students by name, not by number.
You’ll be taught via lectures, interactive seminars, workshops, small group activities and classroom debates. Every stage of the programme is also supported by e-learning material.
As the course progresses, you’ll be expected to take control of your own learning and, with a number of optional modules to choose from, you can really dive into an area you’re passionate about.
You’ll be assessed mostly through coursework and ‘real-world’ sport business activities like designing, implementing and evaluating marketing solutions. Here, you’ll focus on activities such as applying for funding, appraising financial performance and preparing marketing strategies.
In your final year you’ll conduct a research dissertation meaning you’ll be able to explore an area of your choice in depth with the help of your personal tutor. This is where your learning across your three years at BNU really comes to life with your project being a reflection of where you want to go in your future career.
Placements Plus
BNU is a Placements Plus university. So, whatever degree you do, you can be sure there’ll be plenty of industry-relevant opportunities on offer, to help you get into your chosen field.
We’ll also prepare you for work beforehand, with special skills for work training, further boosting your CV, and building skills employers will value. In recognition of the value we place on these skills we have incorporated this experience into your study time.
Placements Plus is all about helping you get some valuable experience under your belt while you’re a student, to increase your choices later, and help you get the graduate-level job you want.
