If you don’t have the right grades to enrol directly on to our BEng (Hons) Aeronautical Engineering degree, you could opt to start your studies with a foundation year. The extra year is intended to give you the best possible preparation for success on the degree pathway. You’ll study introductory modules relevant to the degree course whilst developing key skills for academic study.
The BEng (Hons) Aeronautical Engineering programme was developed in close consultation with industry professional bodies, including and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) to boost your employability.
You’ll study the engineering principles needed for a career in the aerospace industry, and you’ll gain practical experience on campus in our state-of-the-art Aerospace Centre. Weather permitting, you’ll also take to the skies with flight test lessons in your final year.
What you will study
Foundation Year: Aeronautical Engineering degree
- Foundations of Mathematics – 20 credits
- Further Foundation Maths for Engineers – 20 credits
- Collaboration in Engineering – 40 credits
- English for Engineering- 20 credits (optional)
- Fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering- 20 credits
- Foundation Engineering Principles – 20 credits (optional)
Year One: Aeronautical Engineering degree
Year one of this engineering programme provides essential scientific principles and practices associated with aeronautical engineering. This includes an introduction to using design tools and general manufacturing/workshop techniques. You will also learn how to use industry-standard CAD packages and programming language.

Year Three: Aeronautical Engineering degree
Year three modules include aerodynamics, propulsion and aircraft structures. You’ll learn about advanced computational tools and modelling techniques, and produce a dissertation. You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in real aircraft flight testing as part of our Flight Dynamics and Control module.
- Individual Project (BEng) – 40 credits
- Engineering Computational Analysis – 20 credits
- Aircraft Structure – 20 credits
- Aerodynamics and Propulsion – 20 credits
- Flight Dynamics and Control – 20 credits
- Supervised Work Experience (SWE) – 120 credits (optional)
Teaching
The BEng Aeronautical Engineering degree is taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, practical laboratory sessions and seminars. You will also need to devote time to self-study, such as conducting research and preparing for your assessments and lectures.
You will also have the opportunity to visit sites such as Rolls Royce, GE Aviation, British Airways Maintenance Cardiff (BAMC) and Airbus, and learn from guest lectures delivered by senior industrialists and academics from the Ministry of Defence, BAMC, the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and various aerospace industry companies, on current technological advancements in the field.
In the final year, subject to weather conditions, you will fly inside a real aircraft to consolidate your understanding of aircraft static and dynamic behaviour and control principles.
Assessment
Modules are assessed through a mixture of exams, coursework, simulation and problem-based exercises. Speaking in front of your colleagues also forms part of your assessment in group design and project modules, which will develop your presentation and communication skills.
To successfully progress onto the BEng (Hons) Aeronautical Engineering degree, you will be required to obtain a minimum average of 60% in the following modules: Fundamentals of Flight, Foundation Mechanical Science, Foundation of Mathematics and Foundation Calculus.
