BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying and Construction

Overview

Quantity Surveying and Construction focuses on controlling and managing the costs of construction projects; you could be involved with any stage of a project, from feasibility, design and construction, through to extension, refurbishment, maintenance and even demolition.

Our course will help you gain an understanding of the technical aspects of construction over the whole life of a building or facility. You will learn to understand contracts, budgets, quantities, measurements and sustainability to achieve the best quality and value within the project’s specifications. You are likely to be involved in a range of services, from cost consultancy to contract management.

You will be able to advance your professional skills through an optional industry placement between years two and three. This placement year can count as part of the required experience for Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors professional status.

We provide core workshop materials at no cost, and give cash awards – £150, £200 and £300 in years one, two and three respectively – to support personal materials/printing costs*.
This course is pending accreditation from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, which will mean your learning is kept relevant to industry and recognised by employers as a benchmark of quality.

This course sits within the suite of Built Environment programmes at DMU. It aims to prepare students for employability and for Chartered membership of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, following two years of practical training and also for those wishing to progress to Masters courses. The programme culminates in both the Integrated Design project with Building Surveying and Architectural Technology students and a dissertation project in which students design and carry out their own research into a specialist area.

Module assessment strategies have a wide range of methods including portfolio presentations, essays, reports, oral and graphical presentations and continuous assessment regimes, particularly in the studio-based aspects of modules.

Our integrated team of built environment professionals teach and research architecture, practice and measurement. The academic team is committed to a rich range of teaching, learning and student support, and assessment methods to reflect the vocational nature of the course. The course draws on the wide range of research expertise in the Leicester School of Architecture, ranging from technology and sustainability to the practice of quantity surveying. You will also benefit from the input of practitioners and specialists and visiting guest lecturers.

Contact hours

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, group work and self-directed study. Assessment is through coursework (presentations, essays and reports). Your precise timetable will depend on the optional modules you choose to take, however, in your first year you will normally attend around 16 hours of timetabled taught sessions (lectures and tutorials) each week, and we expect you to undertake at least 23 further hours of independent study to complete project work and research

Art and design facilities

The award-winning Vijay Patel Building brings all of our art and design courses together providing inspiring, flexible spaces, studios and facilities which invite creativity and innovation.

Students use our state-of-the-art workshops, labs and studios to experiment and test in the same way they will in industry. There is access to advanced and precise laser cutters, 3D scanning / 3D printing, milling and rapid prototyping machines. Alongside model making, small scale video production and a high-performance computing facility with a range of software and analysis tools that can be used for teaching and research purposes.

We will provide access to CAD facilities benefiting from a range of software and analysis tools such as, CostX, AutoCAD, Revit, 3ds max, Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, Rhino / Grasshopper, V-Ray, Design Builder and NHER Plan Assessor.

More flexible ways to learn

We offer an equitable and inclusive approach to learning and teaching for all our students. Known as the Universal Design for Learning (UDL), our teaching approach has been recognised as sector leading. UDL means we offer a wide variety of support, facilities and technology to all students, including those with disabilities and specific learning differences.

Just one of the ways we do this is by using ‘DMU Replay’ – a technology providing all students with anytime access to audio and/or visual material of lectures. This means students can revise taught material in a way that suits them best, whether it’s replaying a recording of a class or adapting written material shared in class using specialist software.

Campus Centre

The home of  De Montfort Students’ Union, (DSU) our Campus Centre offers a welcoming and lively hub for student life. Conveniently located at the heart of campus, it includes a convenience store, a Subway and a Starbucks. Here you can find the DSU-owned charitable accommodation service Sulets and DSU’s shop, SUpplies, selling art supplies, stationery and clothing, and printing and binding services. The building is also home to the DSU officer team.
