Overview
One of the largest and most influential markets in the world today, the construction industry is projected to grow from US$8.5 trillion in 2015 to US$10.3 trillion in 2020. In the UK alone, it contributed £103 billion in economic output in 2014 and accounted for 6% – or 2.1 million – of all jobs.
Accompanying this growth is the commensurate demand for construction management, with professional input required at all stages of building work – from concept to detailed design, construction and maintenance. This course, accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), aims to prepare you to work towards chartered status and roles in construction management wherever in the world you choose.
Ranked among the 7th best universities in the country for ‘Building and town planning’ in the Guardian University Guide 2019, Coventry has been educating construction professionals for over half a century, keeping in step with the changing needs of technological advancement and the growing importance of its social and environmental.
Course information
The course is designed to prepare you for a career supervising all manner of construction projects, learning the principles, practices and considerations required to schedule and coordinate construction and design processes effectively, as well as the hiring and managing of specialty trade contractors, for example, plumbers, electricians or carpenters.
Covering a broad range of subject areas, the core themes include construction technology, building science and structures, the legal and regulatory framework of building, engineering surveying and construction processes, construction management, contractual procedures and construction finance.
Why choose this course?
Employers all over the world are crying out for highly trained professionals with the technical, leadership and management skills to coordinate, plan, direct and budget the building of a vast array of construction projects – from motorways and bridges, schools and hospitals to wastewater treatment plants, residential, commercial and industrial structures.
Within the UK alone, the CIOB has found that three quarters of contractors are operating at or near full capacity – with more than 230,000 new recruits by 2020.
This professionally accredited course blends traditional design skills with modern technologies, using traditional drafting methods alongside computer aided design (CAD). It aims to enable you to develop the skills necessary to become a highly-trained professional in this very demanding but rewarding discipline, setting you on the path towards chartered status and full membership of the CIOB.
Coventry enjoys excellent links with local and national contractors like Galliford Try, Vinci, Kier and Willmott Dixon, many of whom provide direct input into course development as members of our Civil Engineering and Building Advisory Boards. They also enable you to become involved with the construction community through networking and placement opportunities (subject to availability and application), which can enhance your employment prospects on graduation.
You will be taught by staff with academic and professional experience in architectural practice, civil engineering and the construction industry, having worked in roles as construction and project managers, quantity Surveyors and design managers for a variety of both contracting and consultant organisations. We also have a strong portfolio of industry-related research, particularly in the areas of low carbon building technology, sustainable construction materials and engineering education, which ensures you stay abreast of new technologies and emerging issues.
Teaching is highly practical; throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to draw on real-life case studies to reinforce teaching, including the use of site visits. You also have a unique opportunity to undertake teaching in the Simulation Centre and participate in integrated project work, where theory is put into practice as soon as it is learned.
International experience opportunities
Construction is a global industry with the demand for building professionals overseas set to rise dramatically. The United Nations has identified nine countries, which will account for half the world’s population growth between now and 2050: India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, the US, Indonesia and Uganda.
The content of the course continuously refers to the international context in which construction takes place, which gives an international perspective to your studies and future career as a construction manager. For example, we draw on a variety of international case studies, covering contemporary topics such as sustainability in Spain and building projects like the Sydney Opera House, Channel Tunnel and Burj Khalifa, among others.
During the course, you have the option of participating in an international fieldtrip, which provides the opportunity to experience the built environment in other countries (application and additional costs may apply). If you opt for a sandwich year, you can also spend time studying abroad; we currently have links with universities in Europe, America and Asia.
Career prospects
The complexity and scale of modern construction projects requires construction professionals with expertise in construction management, who can work either on site or within an office to ensure they are delivered safely, within budget, on deadline and to the highest possible quality.
This course is designed to prepare you for employment managing the construction of building projects at home and abroad, for large multinational companies or regional businesses. You could find yourself working as a construction supervisor, general contractor, project manager, constructor, project engineer or site manager. Many construction managers are self-employed, but others are employed by construction management or contracting firms, property owners, developers or consulting firms.
When you are ready to find permanent employment, you will also receive support from our award-winning Faculty careers service, EEC Futures, which won the ‘Best Placement Service in the UK’ award at the National Undergraduate Employability Awards in 2015 and 2016.
Coventry University is committed to preparing you for your future career and giving you a competitive edge in the graduate job market. The University’s Careers and Employability team provide a wide range of support services to help you plan and prepare for your career.
