Overview
We live in a world governed and connected by technology. At DMU we believe that you should study the nature of the ‚wired’ environment and how it influences who you are. As part of our approach to digital humanities, you will have the opportunity to see how communication and language operate on web-based platforms, and how the application of digital tools and methods can deepen the knowledge of your chosen subject area.
Your first year will introduce you to the study of language in general, how sounds become words and how words are put together to create meaning. You will develop your ability to take language apart as well as learn how to put it together to create clear, effective communication.
Second and third year options include teaching English, a final-year work placement module and the opportunity to study material such as propaganda and interrogation, pragmatics – which looks at the gap between what we say and what we mean – psycholinguistics, and the political, social and cultural roles of language.
The language you speak shapes the world you see. This degree helps you understand both better, and to make connections between what you study and what goes on in the world beyond the classroom.
Key features:
- With a wide range of highly specialised modules, you can study the theories and practice of English language in detail, as well as tailor your learning to your specific interests and career ambitions. Modules you can choose from include Sociolinguistics, English Language in UK Schools, Textual Studies Using Computers and Language, Mind and Culture.
- You will study a range of topics, including words in action, a foreign language, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics and TESOL.
- Develop a global understanding of the English language through our international experience programme, DMU Global. Students have previously explored ekphrastic writing and themes of oppression in Berlin, and visited TED HQ and key literary locations in New York.
- Evolve a range of transferrable skills that are valuable to a variety of career paths. Our graduates have gone on to work at Meisei University in Tokyo, the Department of Transport, communications agencies and schools in the UK and overseas.
- Visiting lecturers have included world-renowned expert of forensic linguistics Dr John Olsson, while organised trips to professional events have seen students visit the London Language Show.
- Gain workplace abilities and experience by putting your research, reasoning and communication skills into practice on a placement or extracurricular internship during your degree.

Facilities and features
Clephan Building
Clephan Building is home to DMU’s humanities subjects, and is equipped with the latest audio-visual equipment and cinema screens.
Currently Clephan houses some key Arts, Design and Humanities student support facilities including the Arts, Design and Humanities Placement Team and the Faculty’s Advice Centre, where you can access information about timetabling, specialist support queries. and any other questions you may have about your course.
The building also features the Leicester Centre for Creative Writing, Centre for Textual Studies, Centre for Adaptations, and the International Centre for Sports History and Culture.
Library
The main Kimberlin Library is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (other than in exceptional circumstances) and offers a huge range of online resources, all of which can be remotely accessed from anywhere you choose.
The library is run by dedicated staff who offer additional support to students, including help with academic writing, research strategies, literature searching and reference management and assistive technology, and mathematical skills for non-maths students. There is also a Just Ask service for help and advice, available via email or telephone.
Learning zones
Our Learning Zones and the The Greenhouse also provide space for group or individual work and study.
There are 1,600 study places across all library locations, more than 700 computer stations, laptops to borrow, free wi-fi and desktop power outlets.
You can also book rooms with plasma screens, laptops and DVD facilities for group work and presentations, secure an individual study room with adjustable lighting or make use of our assistive technology.
Opportunities and careers
Placements
All students of English Language have the opportunity to pursue a work placement as part of their degree, by taking the ‚English Language in the Workplace’ module. We also actively encourage students to become involved in such activities as the European ERASMUS+ university exchange / placement scheme and the US Exchange Programme. Student involvement in Open Days as guides and subject ambassadors is also actively sought; the single best advertisement we can give for our degree comes when the students, and not the tutors, describe what the course has given them.

This is our innovative international experience programme which aims to enrich your studies and expand your cultural horizons – helping you to become a global graduate, equipped to meet the needs of employers across the world. Through #DMUglobal, we offer a wide range of opportunities including on-campus and UK activities, overseas study, internships, faculty-led field trips and volunteering, as well as Erasmus+ and international exchanges.
In recent years, students of English Language have engaged in #DMUglobal activity in New York, Tokyo, India, the Czech Republic, Berlin, Canada, and Thailand, and we are continually looking for new destinations to allow us to explore the connections between what we do in the classroom and what happens in the world beyond.

Our graduates have high-level linguistic, reasoning and analytical skills, making them very employable. We develop our students’ information analysis and presentation skills to produce extremely articulate, adaptable, professional communicators who can operate with ease in any setting and with any group of people.
