Overview
Our Human Resource Management MA course aims to extend your understanding of business and personnel and the impact their management can have on successful organisations.
The management and development of human resources is a challenging task in any organisation. As the rapid pace of technological change continues, markets expand internationally and legislation becomes increasingly complex, the need to ensure both businesses and their personnel adapt accordingly has become ever more important.
This Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) accredited course is designed for those who want to pursue senior level careers in human resource management (HRM). Please see the Accreditation and Professional Recognition section for further details. We aim to cover the essential theoretical knowledge, intellectual frameworks and practical skills required by today’s employers in a range of business contexts. This is supported by opportunities to learn from guest speakers drawn from the HR profession (subject to availability) and study in an internationally diverse environment.

Course information
Human Resource Management (HRM) examines the processes and principles associated with the management of work and people. HR professionals and managers operate within increasingly complex and changing organisational and contextual circumstances, whether in the market, public or ‘third’ sectors irrespective of the size of their organisations or the types of goods or services provided.
This programme of study has been designed to meet and reflect the CIPD’s current professional standards and expectations, designed to broaden your awareness of HR generalist and specialist functions in a UK and international context, considering how internal and external context impact upon HRM, the role of the HR practitioner and how HRM can lead to better work and better working lives. Please see the Accreditation and Professional Recognition section for further details.
Aiming to give you wide exposure to a range of organisations, you should explore the relationship of HR to other functions in the organisation and the contribution of HR to achieving corporate objectives. The course also includes an optional work placement* of a minimum of six to eight weeks within the HRM department of an organisation in the UK, as part of the Project module. Following a competitive application process, this could provide you with the unique opportunity to assess the theories introduced within the classroom, in the context of a specific work organisational environment.
The course aims to help you develop a range of academic and employability skills, alongside HRM specific knowledge and understanding in line with the current CIPD requirements. Please see the Accreditation and Professional Recognition section for further details. Modules are also designed to offer experience of applied HR in practice, by developing HR policy or training solutions as part of your learning experience should you wish to develop a specialised focus.
This course can be offered on a part-time basis, with study over two years. Whilst we would like to give you all the information about our part-time offering here, it is tailored for each course each year depending on the number of part-time applicants. Therefore, the part-time teaching arrangements vary. You can make an enquiry about part-time study using our online forms, for UK and for EU/International students.
*Please note that we are unable to guarantee any placement, internship, international conferences or study abroad opportunities and that any such opportunities referred to on this webpage may be subject to additional costs (e.g. travel, visas and accommodation etc.), competitive application, availability and/or meeting any applicable visa requirements. To ensure that you fully understand the requirements in this regard, please contact the International Office for further details if you are an EU or International student.
Why choose this course?
Coventry has taught postgraduate personnel management for over 30 years and is currently a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) approved assessment centre. Currently, CIPD is the only body in the world that can award Chartered status to HR professionals. Please see the Accreditation and Professional Recognition section for further details.
We have received previous students from numerous well-known employers over the years, covering the public and private sectors, including large health organisations, councils, higher education institutions, professional services firms and logistics and transport companies.
This course aims to equip you with industry standard knowledge and understanding and skills to drive organisational performance. It is informed by the CIPD’s guidance on the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to go on to a potential future career in human resources, and we have in the past welcomed HR professionals to give lectures on their experiences in the field. Please note guest lectures are subject to availability. Please see the Accreditation and Professional recognition section for further details.
We aim to offer an international student experience with the opportunity to attend international student conferences* organised with partner universities in places like Italy, allowing you the chance to expand your knowledge of HRM in an international context and widen your own cultural competencies. This is further supported by a student body that is typically made up of students drawn from a number of nationalities.
