Overview
The event industry is currently facing a wide range of issues – meaning that businesses now more than ever are in need of creative managers who can help them get closer to their customers through event marketing, or help solve the difficult issues facing the creative industries.
The event sector was forecasted to grow to over £48 billion by 2020 in the UK alone, and in 2018 it supported 570,000 full time jobs. Our MSc International Events Management course aims to provide specialist training and an in-depth knowledge of the event industry and the full event management cycle for those who are currently working in, or seeking to work in, this dynamic and exciting industry.
As current members of the Association of Event Management Education (AEME) we follow industry trends closely, which is of increasing importance in the current climate. You will have the opportunity to examine actual business case studies, gain hands-on experience of managing real-life events and hear from industry speakers (subject to availability). You can further enhance your employability by undertaking a company internship* as part of your final semester Project module , which has seen past students work for various event venues and organisations such as Compass at the Ricoh Arena and Festival de Rocamadour in the Dordogne.

Course information
This course gives you the opportunity to learn from tutors who have first-hand production experience within events. Where possible we hope to identify opportunities for you to gain experience of working with reputable event managers and venues (subject to availability, competitive application, meeting any visa requirements and additional costs may apply), putting theory into practice, while also making use of simulation exercises to assess the planning and running of your own events. Please note that staff are subject to change.
You’ll have the opportunity to examine the structure, operation and organisation of the event industry within private, public and not-for-profit sectors, with the chance to learn how to apply business principles, such financial and strategic management to the solution of event management problems. You’ll also study the concepts, characteristics and operations of events and festivals, particularly from a commercial perspective.
As the course progresses, bespoke modules enable you to study specialist topics, such as events sustainability and events operations management. We will examine the ways in which human resource management can improve operational effectiveness and efficiency, as well as the specific issues arising from managing volunteers. We will introduce you to the latest theory and practice in the fields of leadership, flexibility and change management.
The culmination of your Master’s course will be the Project module, which allows you the option to either conduct research, or undertake a workplace project on behalf of an organisation, subject to availability, competitive application, meeting any visa requirements and additional fees may apply.
This course can be offered on a part-time basis, with study over two years. Whilst we would like to give you all the information about our part-time offering here, it is tailored for each course each year depending on the number of part-time applicants. Therefore, the part-time teaching arrangements vary. You can make an enquiry about part-time study using our online forms, for UK and for EU/International students.
Why choose this course?
Events are an integral part of our 21st century society. They contribute significantly to tourism, creative enterprise, business development and information exchange, as well as customer, community or fan engagement. In the current climate, they require management by individuals able to respond to change, seeking to adapt to external factors quickly and effectively.
This postgraduate events management programme blends theory and practice-oriented study to provide you, upon successful completion, with the advanced skills and knowledge to organise all manner of events successfully – from the initial planning stages right through to design, implementation and evaluation.
We aim to prepare you to produce and operate live events, familiarising you with a variety of events, including conferences, conventions, global summits, festivals, product launches, sporting spectacles and corporate hospitality. We will try to teach you how to overcome challenges and mitigate risks and issues that can arise.
We also examine how the external environment impacts on event organisers and organisations, particularly the economic, legal, ethical, political and sociological dimensions, looking at issues such as CSR, increased professionalisation and internationalisation.
We currently have excellent links with local employers, including the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) and Arena Birmingham, as well as the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, which are designed to provide input to course management and development. The course also offers the opportunity to embed professional experience, which could see you extend your course by up to a year and gain experience in industry – find out more about the professional experience option and please refer to the professional experience section in the overview tab for information on requirements and additional fees that apply.
You’ll have the opportunity to showcase and run live events throughout the course and attend field trips to experience how events are run both in the UK and abroad*.
