Overview
With a broad-ranging Oil and Gas Engineering MSc, you could work across the world in the oil and gas industry.
This comprehensive course has been designed and delivered in collaboration with highly experienced oil and gas professionals and enables you to become student members of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) at no extra cost, and the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), which is currently free for students under 29 years old (additional fees apply for those above this age).
It aims to equip you with the advanced sector-specific knowledge and skills required to succeed in the competitive, ever-evolving energy industry. You will study the engineering theory, technology, systems and practice associated with the full oil and gas life-cycle, examining upstream, midstream and downstream operations from exploration and production, right through to refining and marketing.
Our currently extensive industry links can enable you to benefit from technical site visits*, which have previously included the National Engineering Laboratory, as well as a range of expert guest lectures, such as the former Vice President of British Petroleum.
Work placement option
This master’s programme provides you with the additional option to apply for a ‚work placement’ opportunity during your first semester with us. The ‚work placement’, which if secured, is designed to further develop your skills, knowledge and professional experience with the aim of maximising your employability prospects. Please note that the optional placement modules incur an additional tuition fee of £4,000. Find out more about the work placement pathway.

Course information
Upon successful completion, this course will prepare you for a global career as a graduate engineer in the oil and gas industry, furnishing you with a solid foundation in fluid flow systems, oil and gas production engineering and process control, based on international environmental operational frameworks.
Our broad range of module subjects aim to develop your practical and technical knowledge of drilling and well engineering, multiphase flow systems, production and reservoir engineering, crude processing, gas technologies, engineering materials durability and sustainability, as well as health, safety and environmental management.
Encouraging advanced problem-solving skills, we will explore how to tackle complex engineering problems with shifting baselines and varying degrees of resources and information.
You will be provided the opportunity to gain practical experience in a wide range of engineering and technology disciplines, and you should learn how to design appropriate components, systems or processes to improve the quality and functionality of equipment and plant within individual and complex environments. You could also further your understanding of the concepts surrounding corrosion, life cycle, mechanical principles, control, fluid flow and its combined importance in the continuation of an operational facility.

The oil and gas industry is continuously developing; the reservoirs from which oil and gas can be extracted have become more complex and the production and processing conditions have become more challenging in areas such as the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, China, Australia and Africa, as well as the UK’s North Sea. In 2017, capital investment in the UK offshore oil and gas industry was £5.6 billion and the industry spent £8.2 billion operating its assets.
Expected to remain as a major contributor to the economy of many developed and developing regions, the oil and gas industry continues to be driven not only by new discoveries, but also by a constant demand to find newer, safer, more efficient and cost-effective methods of extracting and processing the resources.
Whilst exploration continues to identify major new finds across the world, these are increasingly less accessible and require complex engineering solutions to deliver effective operations and supply. According to the trade association Oil & Gas UK, the industry supports more than 300,000 jobs in the UK including those throughout the supply chain.
Currently one of the few courses of its kind in the UK, upon successful completion this course will provide you with specialist education in oil and gas engineering and aims to provide you with the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills required by the industry to solve and manage oil and gas engineering problems and complexities, and to optimise existing processes and deliver increased efficiencies.
